Celebrating a Combined 30 Years of Service. As our final long service celebration of the year, we are proud to mark a truly special milestone. Stephen Ingledew, Paul Jones, and Neil Massey are each celebrating 10 years with VolkerRail, having all started on the very same day a decade ago.

From the northern reaches of Scotland to the southern tip of Cornwall, across the West Coast, the East Coast, and even into Ireland, this trio has delivered signalling alterations in every corner of the country.

Stephen and Paul began their journey as test engineers, steadily progressing to lead testers and now senior testers. Neil, affectionately known as their “railway dad”, has guided them throughout, offering wisdom, encouragement, and a steady hand through countless projects and long months away from home.

When asked about their journey together, they summed it up perfectly: “It’s been brilliant.” “Working together – that’s what made it really.” “It’s not felt like 10 years; the years have flown by.”

Together, they have built more than careers; they have built a bond that feels like family. Neil, who has trained and assessed over 100 signallers during his time as a senior testing and commissioning engineer, now looks ahead towards retirement. Meanwhile, Stephen and Paul are ready to step into the role of mentors themselves, the next generation of railway dads, guiding and inspiring those who follow.

In their words, "their journey is a shining example of what VolkerRail stands for: growth, opportunity, and progression. It is about reaching your ceiling, and then pushing beyond it"; and that is exactly what they have done.

Here’s to Stephen, Paul, and Neil. Thank you for your dedication, your teamwork, and your incredible contribution over the past 10 years.

As we share our final long service posts of 2025, today we’re proud to recognise Eddie Hanson, who marks 10 years with VolkerRail.

Over the past decade, Eddie has helped grow our E&P team from just two people to more than 70 at it’s peak, while contributing his expertise as an electrical engineer to major projects including NWEP, Merseyrail, the North West & Central E&P Framework and the Transpennine Route Upgrade.

Reflecting on his journey, Eddie highlighted the integrity and positive culture at VolkerRail, saying he can see how the company “genuinely cares about its people - that’s something I’ve really appreciated and bought into.” He also shared the pride he feels in seeing his team recognised for their achievements.

Eddie’s dedication has made a lasting impact, and we thank him for his commitment over the past decade.

Today, we have another long-service celebration, and recognise Darren Jones, who recently marked 10 years with VolkerRail.

Darren has spent almost 30 years in the rail sector. Initially starting his career as a p-way engineer before moving into health and safety and obtaining his certification with NEBOSH and IOSH.

Darren first joined VolkerRail in the 2011, as a health and safety advisor in our Plant division, before an exciting opportunity as took him to Australia. On returning to the UK, Darren rejoined VolkerRail thanks to the positive experience he’d had here, joining our Major Projects division, as a health and safety manager for schemes including Bromsgrove station and NWEP.

Darren later moved to VolkerRail Specialist Businesses, supporting the division’s growth. Today, he is responsible for health and safety matter for our Power and Civils division, and most recently expanding his role to also lead health and safety for Rail Operations.

When asked why he chose health and safety, Darren said it offered a secure career path where you can help others make the right choices, so that everyone gets home safe every day.

Thank you, Darren, for your dedication and for keeping our people safe. We’re excited to see what the next chapter brings.

As the year comes to a close, we’re proud to share our final long service milestone of 2025.

Today, we celebrate Vikky Goodwin, who joined us from VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd following her time on the Doncaster Carr Depot project.

Seeing the opportunities across the sector, and within VolkerWessels UK, Vikky joined our then Signalling and Power division as a document controller. From there, Vikky not only shaped our document control procedures but also championed mental health initiatives, becoming our mental health champion lead, and developed an industry‑leading programme that empowers frontline operatives to engage in meaningful mental health conversations.

Reflecting on her decade-long career, Vikky shared that she has fond memories, from working on major projects, the amazing managers she’s had, and the great people she’s worked alongside, along with how proud she is of her team.

Thank you, Vikky, for your dedication and innovative ideas over the last 10 years. We look forward to seeing you continue to inspire and drive positive change in the years ahead.

720 volunteering hours and more than £7,000 worth of social value - that's what more than 60 VolkerRail employees and supply chain partners achieved when transforming Bedale Station, part of the Wensleydale Railway heritage line in North Yorkshire.

Across just two days, teams united to deliver essential upgrades to the station and surrounding infrastructure, carrying out timber bearer renewals, sleeper replacements and welding. The work also extended to constructing a new footpath, station maintenance, painting, litter picking and de‑vegetation, ensuring the site was revitalised for the local community.

Thank you again to all our employees and supply chain partners for making this such a successful event.

"To say you’ve been at one place for 30 years and have no regrets, and nothing you’d want to change" – That’s an incredible statement any company would be proud to hear.

Earlier this year, Tony Everatt reached an amazing milestone: 30 years with VolkerRail. Joining straight from college, Tony has grown with us and witnessed the company, and the rail sector, evolve over three decades.

When we spoke to Tony about his journey, he told us that if given the chance, he wouldn’t change a thing, and that it hadn't felt like 30 years - the time has gone quickly.

Our success is built on dedicated people like Tony, and we’re proud to celebrate long service milestones that reflect commitment and passion. Thank you, Tony and here’s to many more years.

Content Warning: This post discusses a fatal road traffic collision and bereavement.

This week, we are reminded of the critical role each of us plays in keeping our roads safe. With a large fleet and many colleagues driving daily to sites across the country, road safety shouldn’t just be a yearly campaign, it must be part of our everyday responsibility.

To help raise awareness, we spoke with Vicki McCarthy to hear the story behind her launch of the Lost and Found Road Safety Campaign

11 years ago, Vicki’s life was forever changed when a road traffic collision claimed the lives of her daughter and four of her daughters’ friends.

Now, Vicki is bravely sharing her story to help educate students and colleagues on the importance of road safety and how to speak up when new drivers take to the road, whether alone or with passengers.

Her message is a powerful reminder of why speaking up, staying alert, and supporting one another on the road truly matter:. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPGa4j0iB-I

Whilst watching this podcast, please remember those who may have experienced a similar tragedy and support colleagues that may struggle with this campaigns messaging.

Today, we are delighted to celebrate another long service award, congratulating Connor Walkinshaw on reaching his 10 year-long service with us.

Connor first joined VolkerRail Ltd as an apprentice and has enjoyed a highly successful and rewarding journey.

We first met Connor at his apprentice selection interview, where our engineers were immediately struck by the thoroughness and depth of his research into railway signalling. He also demonstrated natural leadership qualities and a collaborative approach, excelling in teamwork as he engaged with tasks throughout the day.

After completing his apprenticeship, consistently receiving excellent feedback from his trainers for his outstanding performance, Connor took up the role of assistant installer, and began building his career in testing, where he now holds the position of senior test engineer, having established himself as a highly capable Signalling Tester in Charge.

Connor’s journey is just one example of the many positive career development stories at VolkerRail.

We are proud of Connor’s achievements, and look forward to seeing him continue to grow his career as we grow within our business.

Well done to Norman for representing VolkerRail at this year’s Practical Electrification Challenge. An immersive, two-day experience hosted by PWI: The Institution for Rail Infrastructure Engineering at Network Rail’s Swindon training spans.

From cantilever assembly to wire tensioning and bonding, Daniel got stuck into the tools and techniques behind modern OLE systems, gaining valuable insight into how theory meets practice in the field.

Daniel feedback on the two day event, and shared that the experience gave him a solid understanding of what goes into installing OLE infrastructure, and that the support from PWI staff and supervisors made it a great learning environment.

Although OLE isn’t part of his current apprenticeship, Daniel also recommends the challenge to anyone looking to broaden their railway knowledge.

Thank you for representing the business Daniel, and well done for stepping out of your comfort zone and experiencing something different. You should be proud.
