Step inside Fort Burgoyne for a rare opportunity to explore this historic site and uncover its rich past alongside its thriving wildlife.
Visitors are invited to wander at their own pace through the parade ground, stables, terreplein, and selected casemates, soaking up the unique character of this remarkable fort.
For those keen to delve deeper, free guided tours led by our knowledgeable and friendly volunteers will be available to book on the day. These exclusive tours will take you behind the scenes into areas not usually open to the public, including the lower levels, shooting gallery, chemin de ronde, and other hidden spaces.

Fort Burgoyne booklets will also be available to purchase for £5 each. Cash or card payments acceptable.
There is no need to book.
Cost: Free entry- donations gratefully appreciated.
Dogs: Dogs on leads are welcome but will not be allowed to the lower levels of the Fort- please remember to clean up after your dogs on site.
Disability access: We welcome all visitors, however, as an ancient scheduled monument we are restricted to the adjustments that can be made. Access to the lower levels is currently unavailable for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility due to steep steps and uneven floors. Access to the terreplein is via a grassed slope- this may not be suitable for some wheelchairs. Ramps will be in place to help navigate over smaller changes in ground level.
Parking: There is free parking on site.

Great walk in our door step 🚶🚶🏽‍♂️♥️

Want to explore the coast this weekend? This 4.7 mile (7.5 km) circular walk from St Margaret’s Bay follows sections of the King Charles III England Coast Path, with open coastal scenery and quieter stretches inland shaped by the area’s history.

The route passes South Foreland Lighthouse, now cared for by the National Trust, alongside reminders of the area’s role in guarding a busy stretch of water. Sea views feature strongly along the walk and help define this eastern edge of Kent.
The terrain varies, with steps and slopes in places that add to the character of the route but may not suit everyone, so it is worth checking the route details before heading out.

At the end of the walk, the shingle beach of St Margaret’s Bay is just a five‑minute downhill stroll, bringing you back into the heart of the bay. The Coastguard pub is nearby and is often said to be the nearest pub to France.
