Heritage Walks Festival: Downpatrick and beyond
Monday 9 June to Saturday 14 June

This year’s Heritage Walks Festival, organised by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and the The Saint Patrick Centre will take place from Monday 9 June until Saturday 15 June. This annual event features an exciting range of themed walks designed to enable local people and visitors to explore the fascinating heritage of Downpatrick and the local area and enjoy our beautiful scenery. Expert guides and walk leaders will take participants on a journey of discovery to uncover the story of how Downpatrick developed over time and reveal some of its hidden secrets and unusual tales!

Guided walks are available from Monday 9 June to Saturday 14 June and include:

• Monday 9 June, Wednesday 11 June and Friday 13 June: 2-hour walks around Downpatrick exploring the story of the town from earliest times to the present. These walks are free and take place at 12pm. Pre-booking applies.

• Wednesday 11 June: a two-hour walk exploring the Quoile. Find out more about the old port of Downpatrick, the quays and the stories of merchants and travellers. This evening walk starts at 7pm. Admission is £5 and pre-booking applies.

• Thursday 12 June: a two-hour walk exploring Downpatrick’s historic gaols and gaol sites. Find out more about crime and punishment in the past and hear the stories of medieval, eighteenth and nineteenth century prisoners. Admission is £5 and pre-booking applies.

• Friday 13 June: a two hour walk and tour exploring Ballynoe Stone Circle. Find out more about one of the most important pre-historic monuments in County Down, how it was built and used. Admission is £5 and pre-booking applies.

• Saturday 14 June: for all budding artists in the area, join one of our local artists for a stroll and sketch event around the Quoile! A three hour walk and sketch event. Admission is £5 and pre-booking applies.

• Saturday 14 June: a two-hour walk exploring the Early Christian and Medieval history of Downpatrick, Find out more about the Abbey of Down, the Downpatrick High Cross and the monastic settlements in the town. Admission is £5 and pre-booking applies.

Plus, a guided walk around Tobar Mhuire in Crossgar on Wednesday 11 June and guided walks of Downpatrick for schools.
