The evenings are still long, but the light is already shifting. Right now, in the middle of September, the low sun hits the cliffs at Cheddar Gorge and turns the whole valley to gold.

It is our favourite time of year up on the Mendips. The cliff-top path is 5 minutes from The Studio, and on a clear September evening the view stretches all the way to Wales, the first early-autumn colour just starting to touch the gorge.

The string lights come on just as the Somerset sky shifts from gold to deep blue. 🌿✨

We designed this terrace so our guests would feel like the rest of the world had politely stepped back for the evening. The table is set, the lantern is lit between you, and the wood-fired hot tub is already steaming quietly a few steps away.

The wooden fence holds Draycott at a comfortable distance. Gravel crunches underfoot when you shift between the table and the tub.

Most self-catering places recirculate the same tired air all weekend. The Studio doesn't.

The door to the terrace is open, and the air moving through the room is the same air moving through the Somerset fields outside. Even when it's closed, a quiet ventilation system keeps drawing fresh air in, gently, continuously. What you breathe inside is genuinely clean.

Ashley called it "just such a wonderful place." We think the terrace had something to do with it.

From above, you can see the whole scene at once. The wood-fired hot tub steaming gently. The alfresco table set for two. String lights threaded overhead, a chiminea ready for later, and a private garden wrapped around it all.

At around 8am, the skylights do something to this room that no lamp ever could.

The light pours straight down through the roof, catching the grain of the floor, washing across the dark sofa, settling around the pendant like it belongs there. You can't fake this with styling. It only happens because the building was designed to let it in.

This is what Scandinavian design actually means to us. Nothing unnecessary. Everything in its right place. The geometry of the pendant, the warmth of the timber, the quiet weight of the sofa anchoring the room - none of it was added later. It was built this way from the ground up.

We didn't dress The Studio for a photoshoot. We designed it to feel like this every morning, whether anyone's watching or not. You feel it the moment you walk in, and again with your first coffee, when the room is doing all the work and asking nothing of you 🌿
