🌿 Bog Myrtle 🌿

A shrub which grows in boggy areas in the Highland hills

We are extremely lucky to have Bog Myrtle on our crofts. Bog Myrtle has a wonderful evocative and unique balsamic scent, and is a traditional method of counteracting the Scottish midge! Bog myrtle is also extremely useful for sensitive skin, and can help with skin ageing. But did you know - you can also use the leaves in stews?

We use not only the leaves of the bog myrtle, but the catkins too (these are the most resinous part of the plant). We harvest a little from each plant, dry, then, as with our other salves infuse for six weeks in organic sunflower oil, strain and mix with h**p and a natural vegan wax. We then add in both lavender and lemon myrtle essential oil, both very good antibacterial oils, which can be effective for use on midge bites, and even possibly keeping the midges at bay!

We also use Bog Myrtle in two of our Soaps, Highland Fling, and Heather, Myrtle and Juniper. In these soaps we infuse olive oil for weeks before using in the soap.

To purchase your Bog Myrtle Salve (or as we call it Bog Off Bug Salve), visit our online shop at https://www.macsoap.co.uk/shop/wild-plant-salves
