A great place to visit while at

12 July 1300, Edward I gave 7 shillings in alms in honour of St Thomas the Martyr, after Caerlaverock castle surrendered to his army in Galloway, south-west Scotland.

The account roll for 1300 is full of interesting payments. For instance, there is also a donation to one Henry of Cornwall, wounded by the Scots near Columtach in Galloway. This must have been one of the many skirmishes fought as the English army marched along the banks of the River Cree. For his medicines, and return to England, Henry was given half a mark.

Elsewhere we find a nameless stable-boy, granted five shillings compensation after one of the king's horses trod on him. Handling those warlike beasties was a risky business.
