Velgam Vehera – Trincomalee’s Timeless Treasure 🇱🇰

Tucked away in the peaceful forests near Trincomalee, Velgam Vehera is a 2,000-year-old Buddhist temple rich in history and spiritual charm. Built in the 3rd century BC by King Devanampiyatissa, this sacred site tells a story of cultural unity — where Sinhala and Tamil traditions beautifully intertwine.

Once restored by South Indian Chola rulers and known as Rajarajaperumpalli, it’s also revered by Hindus as Natanar Kovil. The site features a majestic stupa, stone Buddha statues, and inscriptions in both Sinhala and Tamil — a rare blend of Sinhalese-Buddhist and Dravidian-Chola architecture.
