Exclusive* video of vintage vehicles departing the Tay Road Bridge 60th Anniversary Celebrations on Saturday 15th of August 2026. I missed the official procession that morning but I did see them leave, most headed north across the bridge but a few headed south along the A92.

The original footage was 30 minutes so this is a double cropped version I cropped out all the regular traffic and cropped + upscaled for a closer view at the vehicles. There is another version a stop start timelapse with a wider view.

* Yes it really is exclusive as there nobody about to watch them leave, I wonder how many people saw them arrive, though they don’t travel that much around the roundabout.

I will post some photos of the vehicles on Monday and photos of boats and bridges on Tuesday.

Did anyone else see anything unusual during the solar eclipse yesterday?

The timelapse was a bit boring so I thought I would add some 8 bit gaming action

Which C64 sprites do you recognise/remember?

In order
Blood Money (1990)
Uridium (1986)
Cybernoid (1988)
Delta (1987)
Dropzone (1984)
Forgotten Worlds (1989)
Zaxxon (1984)
Hunter’s Moon (1987)
Katakis (1988)
Mega Apocalypse (1987)
Retrograde (1989)
Salamander (1988)
Sanxion (1986)
Thrust (1986)

It’s 100 days until the release of GTA VI on the PS5 and X-Box.
And there are two questions on everyone’s mind.

When is coming out on PC?

Will Heather Street Food feature in the game?

Well maybe only people in Dundee are wondering about the second one.

But the owner of this award winning coffee roasters & donut specialists located beside the V&A really is trying to get his business featured in the game, what an amazing Dundee related Easter Egg that would be to have his coffee and donut van somewhere on the map.

If you visit their Insta page you can see an amusing reel.

Supposedly they have a member of staff related to one of the original DMA Design team. He went on to make the PS2 version of GTA1.

In the 1980s to play a computer game you needed to load the data from tape. EVERY time you wanted to play. This took about 5 – 10 minutes but it felt longer

In case you forgot what you were going to play. A loading screen with music would load first. The picture would appear block by block. This is a homage to loading a game on a Commodore 64.

The image is 200 pixels high by 160 double width pixels using a 16 colour palette but only 4 colours can be in the same character 8 high x 4 double width pixels.

I’m a photographer not an artist so this is a converted photo of the RRS Discovery.

part 2 - Dundee in retro 8 bit style.
Sunrise under the Tay Road Bridge. For about a week in the spring and autumn the sun rises out of the ea and can be viewed through the supports of the Tay Road Bridge.

This dramatic view as it would be seen with the limited colour palette (16 colours) and resolution (200 x 160 wide pixels) of Commodore 64 and the ZX Spectrum which had a colour palette of 15 colours and a resolution of 192 x 256 pixels.

Not such a big difference on this image though the Commodore 64 can display 4 colours per character (8 x 4 wide pixel block) whereas the ZX Spectrum could display only two characters per character (8x8 pixels).

I did a bit of work on the Spectrum version as the conversion software made a mess of the sun, a mosaic of white, light grey and yellow squares.

You can see the original photo in the third image which not AI it was taken on 22nd September 2017.

To celebrate 60 years of the Tay Road Bridge* there will be a family fun day on Saturday 15th of August 2026 featuring vintage vehicles, vintage bus trips, children's entertainment and food and drink.

Unfortunately the free boat trips from the pier that the Fifies** used in Newport-on-Tay has sold out but you can still photograph the boats as they pass under the bridge to give your images some scale.

To give you a taste of what vehicles will be involved in the celebration a few photos from the 50th anniversary celebrations on the 21st of August 2016 which featured vintage cars, vans and buses plus a lot of scooters and motorbikes.

* The bridge was officially opened by the Queen Mother on the 18th of August 1966

** Before the Tay bridge opened a vehicle ferry operated from Newport Pier in Newport-on-Tay to Craig Harbour in Dundee (the current home of the RRS Discovery)

There will be another chance to hear how they built the Tay Road Bridge and a lot more on my Dundee Engineering Tour on
Sunday 15th of August 2026 3.30 – 5.00 pm
