Three Islands Where You Can Get Remarkably Close to Whales
Forget watching whales as tiny dots on the horizon.
✈️ Some islands offer encounters where the ocean itself becomes the main attraction.
Pico, Azores
The waters around Pico are one of the Atlantic's famous whale-watching areas. S***m whales can be seen year-round, while different species pass through these waters throughout the seasons. Boat excursions leave from the island and head into deep Atlantic waters where encounters can happen surprisingly close to the boat.
Tonga
In the waters around Tonga, humpback whales migrate to the islands to breed and raise their calves. Seasonal excursions can offer the rare opportunity to enter the water with humpback whales under regulated conditions.
Réunion Island
Located in the Indian Ocean, Réunion is another place where humpback whales can be observed seasonally. During the southern winter, whales arrive in the surrounding waters, making boat excursions especially popular between roughly June and October.
◽️ Three islands. Three very different settings.
One unforgettable reminder that some of the world's most impressive travel experiences happen far beyond the shoreline.
Which one would you choose: Pico, Tonga, or Réunion?
