🔥 Friday 15th – BIG Tope Action! 🔥
Hello guys and girls,
Now that we’re finally back fishing the ground I love most, the tope trips are officially underway again — and what a way to kick things off! 🎣
These trips start with around 2 hours of mackerel fishing before we head onto the main event… targeting BIG tope for the next 5–6 hours.
Now I know this style of fishing isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’ve ever dreamed of battling a powerful 40–60lb tope, this is your chance. These fish are absolute monsters and they fight like trains once they hit the bait!
We fish relatively close inshore too — normally only around 1.5 to 2 miles off the coast along the reef edges — but don’t let that fool you. Some proper giants patrol these marks.
I’m running all specialist tackle and reels, along with my new favourite setup — the stinger rig. Originally used for pike fishing, but after seeing how effective it is on these big tope, I’m completely sold on it.
The window for these bigger fish is short, usually from early May through to the end of June, so every trip counts.
Now onto yesterday’s session…
We met at the harbour at 9am with a small crew — just me and two good mates. Straight away we headed out to fill the livebait tank with fresh mackerel before making our way to one of my favourite tope marks out of Newhaven.
Once anchored up and the baits were out, the waiting game began…
Two hours passed with absolutely nothing. Not even a sniff.
Then out of nowhere… my rod absolutely SCREAMED off! 🚨
I struck into the fish and handed the rod to Tony’s grandson, who had never caught a tope before in his life. What happened next was unbelievable.
After an epic battle, up came an absolute beast of a fish — estimated high 50s and possibly pushing the magical 60lb mark! A proper fish of a lifetime and one very happy angler onboard.
Not long after that, Al’s rod folded over and he was into another cracking fish, estimated around the 40lb mark. Typical Al though… “I don’t want a photo with it,” so straight back over the side she went after a quick unhook at the back of the boat.
Then right at the death, my rod tore off again. Seeing as Tony had never landed a tope before, I handed him the rod and he got stuck into his first one. Maybe not the biggest fish of the day, but smiles all round and another unforgettable catch onboard.
Trips like this are exactly why I love tope fishing. Long quiet spells… then pure chaos and adrenaline when the rods finally go! 💥
If you fancy the chance of tangling with one of these incredible fish, give me a call and I’ll do my best to get you booked in. We can only fish certain tides for them, so availability is limited.
Stay safe everyone and tight lines 🎣
