Can you tell the difference between the four aerial acrobats gracing our skies this spring and summer?

Whilst Swifts can easily be mistaken for swallows or martins at a glance, they are not actually related.

1. Swifts are characterised by their sickle shaped wings. They can be seen and heard screaming through the skies in larger groups. Swifts are only seen in flight and it's worth noting that they never land on telegraph wires.

2. Swallows are a glossy blue and are characterised by their long forked tail streamers and red throat.

3. Sand Martins are the smallest and the earliest to arrive. They lack the deep blue of House Martins and Swallows being a dusky, pale brown and have a brown band across their chest.

4. House Martins have deep blue glossy wings and back with white underparts, but lack any chest band.

Explore our identification tips and tricks and see if you can figure out which is which next time you're out.

Reporting Swift sightings on Swift Mapper helps to build a picture of where Swifts are nesting and is a free to use app.

There's just something about that makes every path more magical 💙

"This path runs through my local woods in Sheffield and is a well used green space by local people, I love to explore here and get off the beaten track."

P.s. Bluebells are a protected species and are damaged easily by trampling, taking years to recover - by sticking to the path we can all continue to enjoy them for years to come 🙏

Do you have a favourite bluebell path you return to year after year?

Come on down!

Enjoying the English summer

Lots of you are uncertain about going overseas at the moment: should we stay or should we go? Although it may be disappointing not to jet off to foreign destinations, this could be a great year to explore the UK a little and opt for a ‘staycation’. Whether walking, cycling or just relaxing, September still has lots of sun and here on the south coast we have more than other parts of the UK. Even up to mid-October you may not need that jacket! Come and enjoy the countryside and discover our village. Dogs always welcome.

Since our last brief update back in Spring 2020, we have all been through some strange times. But, here we are, about to re-open and welcome visitors again (July 4th). Soon the Deli will re-open (July 1st), the Thai restaurant is already open, the Wednesday market has been operating throughout (with social distancing measures), and the pub will have their outside tables ready (4th July). So come and be part of village life and book a week with us. Dogs welcome.
