Introduction: Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, has always held a unique charm that transcends time and trends. Its rich history, stunning architecture, vibrant cultural scene, and breathtaking landscapes continue to captivate visitors from around the globe. Despite the evolving travel landscape, Edinburgh remains a world-class destination of choice, offering an unforgettable experience to all who venture within its ancient walls. Edinburgh holds an instant appeal to many, and in this blog we will look at what makes it such a special place in so many people’s hearts.
Historical Riches: One cannot speak of Edinburgh without delving into its historical riches. From the imposing Edinburgh Castle perched atop Castle Rock to the cobbled streets of the Old Town, history seeps from every corner. The Royal Mile, with its iconic landmarks such as the Palace of Holyroodhouse and St. Giles' Cathedral, serves as a living testament to the city's royal heritage. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world's largest arts festival, annually transforms the city into a vibrant stage where creativity knows no bounds. Although the city has recently lost the Stone of Destiny (Stone of Scone) to Perthshire, the castle still houses Scotland’s Crown Jewels. Edinburgh, throughout history, has always punched above its weight; whether it is for learning, banking, literature, finance or medicine, Edinburgh has been at the forefront of many things.
Architectural Marvels: Edinburgh boasts a stunning juxtaposition of architectural styles, seamlessly blending medieval grandeur with Georgian elegance and Victorian splendour. The New Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcases neoclassical Georgian townhouses and wide avenues, while the Old Town's labyrinthine alleys lead to hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Lesser-known areas, such as Marchmont or the trendy Stockbridge are fantastic examples of the elegance of Victorian town planning. It seems the planners of Edinburgh have always had in mind the appeal of a vista – most roads entering Edinburgh, at some point, are affording an arresting view of the Castle. The Scott Monument, inspired by Sir Walter Scott's literary legacy, stands tall amidst the Princes Street Gardens, offering panoramic views of the cityscape. The Skyline has changed this decade with the introduction of the W Hotel based at the fabulous St James’ Quarter. Locals often deride it and have christened with the unflattering moniker “The Golden Jobbie” due to it likeness to the poo emoji! However, these critics are missing one vital thing – the viewing deck at the top affords people the most spectacular views of Edinburgh’s main sites – The Castle, The Balmoral, Arthur’s Seat and Salisbury Crags and more. Without what they would consider an eyesore blighting their views.
Cultural Kaleidoscope: As a hub of culture and creativity, Edinburgh leaves a lasting impression on its visitors. The city's museums, galleries, and theatres celebrate its artistic heritage while embracing contemporary innovation. From the National Museum of Scotland, showcasing millennia of history and innovation, to the Scottish National Galleries of Art (we have 4), housing works spanning the centuries from around the world, Edinburgh invites exploration and enlightenment. The Edinburgh International Festival, alongside its Fringe counterpart, showcases a diverse array of performances, from classical concerts to avant-garde theatre, attracting artists and audiences from every corner of the globe. The Fringe (both reviled and adored by the local population) is the biggest Art festival in the World with nearly 2.5 million tickets sold last year. In 2019 (before Covid), the record year saw over 3 million tickets sold – it is hoped that the Fringe of 2024 will challenge this!
You can book your tickets by clicking on the Fringe Logo below.
Natural Wonders: Beyond its urban allure, Edinburgh offers access to some of Scotland's most breathtaking natural wonders. Arthur's Seat, an ancient volcano, provides a panoramic vantage point over the city and the surrounding landscapes. The Water of Leith Walkway offers a tranquil escape from the bustling streets, winding through wooded valleys and past picturesque villages. For those seeking coastal vistas, a short journey takes visitors to the quaint fishing villages of the East Lothian coast or the rugged beauty of the Fife coastline. Like Rome, Edinburgh was said to be built on 7 hills – all afford magnificent views but can anyone name them?

Sports: With two Scottish Premiership football teams and Edinburgh Rugby, Edinburgh holds enough allure for sports fans. And with Murrayfield holding concerts, as well as several home games for the Scottish Rugby team, there is a feast for sports fans too.
Conclusion: In an ever-changing world, Edinburgh stands as a timeless beacon of history, culture, and natural beauty. Despite, what seems to be the Council’s desire to destroy the city and lose it World Heritage status, Its allure transcends fleeting trends, offering visitors an immersive experience that leaves an indelible mark on the soul. Whether wandering the cobblestone streets of the Old Town or savouring the panoramic views from Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh continues to reign as a world-class destination of choice, beckoning travellers to discover its treasures anew with each passing year.

It is impossible to miss that Edinburgh is getting ready to celebrate the coronation of King Charles this weekend: from screenings to exhibitions and street parties, there will be plenty of festivities to enjoy! Here are some of the top events happening in the central area during the coronation weekend:

(1) LIVE SCREENING: If you can't make it to London for the official coronation ceremony, don't worry, because Edinburgh has got you covered. Head to West Princes Street Gardens to watch a live viewing of Westminster Abbey on a big screen at the Ross Bandstand on May 6th. Access to the screening starts at 10am, with the ceremony scheduled to begin at 11am. And that's not all - on the following day, the screens will broadcast the coronation concert at Windsor Castle, so you won't miss a thing. Don't forget to bring your own blankets or chairs, and feel free to bring a picnic to enjoy during the screening. Scott's Café will also be open, serving up tasty take-away food and drinks.

(2) CORONATION BALL: If you're looking for a unique way to celebrate the coronation weekend, don't miss the Coronation Ball at the historic Greyfriars Kirk on May 7th, where Scottish country dancers from around the world will come together for an unforgettable evening of dancing. James Coutts and his well-known Scottish Dance Band will provide the lively music that will have you dancing the night away. To keep your energy levels up, a light hot buffet supper made from fresh local produce will be served during the evening. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

(3) CAMERA OBSCURA: Get ready for a royal treat at the beloved Camera Obscura museum! They've just announced a brand new, one-of-a-kind pop art display to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III. Designed by the talented in-house team, this colourful graphic will feature the King's recognisable profile reflected hundreds of times inside the museum's Giant Kaleidosphere. As the first interactive experience in the entrance area, visitors can't miss this immersive display that will only be available to see from May 5th to 8th.

(4) IF YOU PREFER TO GRAB A BITE/ RAISE A TOAST: McLarens on the Corner and Badger & Co are both getting into the spirit of things, offering special menus of Coronation-inspired dishes and drinks, or, head over to The Queen's Arms on Frederick Street for a traditional pub-style celebration. McLarens will also be hosting a Pooch Coffee Morning on Monday, May 8th where your furry friend will get treated to a "paw-some" goodie bag. For another exciting option, check out Brewhemia's Dine and Drag Pop Royalty event on May 7th. For just £36 per person, you can enjoy a Prosecco reception and a delicious Spring menu while being entertained by hostess Rujazzle and two of Scotland's most illustrious drag Kings. Don't miss out on these amazing events fit for a king or queen!

(5) SOMETHING FOR THE KIDS: Buckingham Palace may be off-limits, but Holyrood Palace is throwing open its doors to kids for a crafty Coronation weekend. Your little princes and princesses can create their very own keepsakes to remember this momentous occasion. With the opportunity to decorate their own crown, design a flag, and make a commemorative badge. So come along and explore the stunning Edinburgh palace, and leave with your very own royal creations.

(6) NOT A FAN?: For those who are not interested in the royal festivities, Edinburgh still has plenty to offer. The city's top attractions, such as the National Museum and Edinburgh Castle, will remain open during the coronation weekend. For some nerdy fun, head to the St James' Quarter for the Edinburgh Comic Con. Alternatively, you can immerse yourself in Scotland's traditional music and culture at the final weekend of TradFest.
