Lake District Western Fells Road Trip 🚗⛰️🌧️

This is the Lake District with the volume turned right up.

Think narrow lanes, wild valleys, steep mountain passes, sheep with zero urgency, and the kind of views that make you forget you were gripping the steering wheel five minutes earlier.

This 3-day route links up some of the Lake District’s most dramatic western roads, including:

It is not the gentlest Lake District drive, and I would not touch Hardknott in awful weather. But on a clear day, with sensible driving and no rushing, this is one of the most exciting short road trips in England.

Expect Roman ruins, moody lakes, proper mountain drama, cosy pub stops, and a few roads that make you question your confidence before rewarding you with ridiculous views.

Sending your kid off on a flight by themselves? Here's the bit that trips up loads of parents. 👀

"Old enough to fly alone" and "the airline will actually look after them" are two completely different things. And the rules are all over the shop depending on who you book with.

The big US airlines (American, Delta, United) will walk a child through the airport gate to gate for around $150 each way. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic? No es**rt at all, they just set a minimum age and wave them off. easyJet and Ryanair won't even carry an under-16 on their own. Same situation, wildly different reality.

So I've pulled together exactly what every main UK and US airline allows: the minimum ages, the fees, the sneaky connection rules that catch people out, and the consent forms you'll need for trips abroad. It's all in the comments.👇🏼

Fancy chasing some Wales finest waterfalls? 💧

Wales is properly underrated for a road trip, and this loop strings together some of its best cascades and scenic drives. So I put one together that hits the lot.

You start down in the Brecon Beacons, where you can actually walk behind the curtain of water at Sgwd yr Eira (still one of my favourite things to do in the UK). Then it's north into the Elan Valley, all giant Victorian dams, empty roads and some of the darkest skies you'll find. Look up on a clear night and you'll see why people go quiet. 🌌

Finish in Snowdonia for Swallow Falls, Aber Falls and a cuppa in Betws-y-Coed while a river roars past your table.

It works as a relaxed 4 to 6 day trip, and yes, there's a free Google Map so you can plot it without any sign-up faff.

Pack the grippy boots though. Those paths get slippy. 🐑
