I practice what I preach - just returned home after a lovely holiday to Puerto De La Cruz in the north of Tenerife with my family.
Puerto de la Cruz on the island's north coast. Lush, unhurried and steeped in natural beauty, the north offers a gentler, more authentic side of Tenerife that families with an eye for something special will absolutely love.
We chose to stay at the iconic Hotel Botanico & The Oriental Spa Garden, and it truly set the tone for the entire trip.
Nestled amid some of the most breathtaking gardens on the island, the hotel is a haven of tranquillity that feels more like a botanical paradise than a conventional resort. The grounds are immaculately kept, with exotic plants, towering palms and vibrant tropical blooms at every turn — a genuine feast for the senses that the children found just as magical as we did.
What makes the north of the island so appealing for families is the pace of it all:
No noise, no crowds — the atmosphere is calm and relaxed, a real contrast to the bustle you find further south
Stunning natural scenery on the doorstep, with easy access to Teide National Park and the dramatic Orotava Valley.
A town with real character — Puerto de la Cruz has lovely squares, local restaurants and a traditional Canarian feel that makes exploring genuinely enjoyable.
For me personally, the highlight was making full use of the Botanico's spa, and in particular their exceptional spa circuit. Moving between the various steam rooms and the sauna at your own pace, with no agenda and no rush, was exactly the kind of restorative experience I'd been craving. It's the sort of indulgence that doesn't feel like a luxury — it feels like a necessity.
By the time we returned home, I felt genuinely rejuvenated rather than in need of another holiday to recover from the first.
The north of Tenerife deserves far more attention than it gets, and the Botanico is the perfect base from which to experience it. Highly recommended for families who want beauty, calm and a little bit of pampering thrown in for good measure.
