Extremely close to the Culloden Battlefield is Cawdor Castle which is still home to the Cawdor family to this day and has evolved over 600 years. Later additions, mainly from the 17th century, were all built in a Scottish style with slated roofs over walls and crow-stepped gables of local stone. This style gives Cawdor a strong sense of unity, and the massive, severe exterior belies an intimate interior that gives the place a surprisingly personal, friendly atmosphere. It is famed for being the 11th century home of Shakespeare’s tragic character, Macbeth. Although the 5th Earl Cawdor is quoted as saying: "I wish the Bard had never written his damned play!" There are portraits by Joshua Reynolds and furniture by Chippendale and Sheraton amongst many other treasures in this romantic castle.

Not far from Inverness is the Culloden Battlefield. This multi-award-winning visitor attraction will transport you back over 250 years to one of the bloodiest periods in Scottish history and to the final place where the Jacobite army of Bonnie Prince Charlie fought to reclaim the throne. You will be able to listen to first-hand accounts leading up to 16 April 1746 when the course of British, European and world history changed forever. Experience the battle in the immersion theatre and view breathtaking displays of artefacts and weaponry. Then, pick up one of the multi-lingual electronic guides and walk the battlefield, where over 1,200 Jacobites died in just one hour. All 'Outlander' fans will surely wish to see the inspiration for Craigh na Dun. It is in fact the standing stones of the Clava Cairns. Sadly, no transportation back in time has been recorded.....to date!

Leaving the Isle of Skye your chauffeur will drive you up the A82 on the west coast of Loch Ness and you'll pass the ruins of Urquhart Castle. Once one of Scotland’s largest castles, Urquhart saw great conflict during its 500 years as a medieval fortress. Control of the castle passed back and forth between the Scots and English during the Wars of Independence. The power struggles continued, as the Lords of the Isles regularly raided both castle and glen up until the 1500s. The last of the government troops garrisoned here during the Jacobite Risings blew up the castle when they left. Urquhart’s iconic ruins remain, offering glimpses into medieval times and the lives of its noble residents. When you arrive at Inverness you'll see Inverness Castle. Standing proudly above the River Ness, Inverness Castle is one of the defining landmarks of the Highland capital. The striking red sandstone castle dominates the city skyline and offers magnificent views across Inverness and towards the surrounding Highlands. While the current building dates largely from the 19th century, the site has played an important role in Scottish history for centuries, witnessing conflicts, royal visits and the growth of Inverness as the cultural heart of the Highlands. Huge thanks to Jane Wood for the images

Continuing your journey to Mallaig you will arrive at the small village of Arisaig. The village was used during the 2nd World War as a training place for agents in war torn occupied Europe. A memorial was built in 2009 to remember the Slovak and Czech soldiers that trained around the village during the war. Here you will be get stunning views of Eigg, Rum, and Skye.
I suggest that you stop at The Old Library Lodge in Arisaig for a light bite to eat and a comfort break before catching the Jacobite Train from Mallaig back to Fort William where your chauffeur will be waiting for you.

Your chauffeur would love to take you on one of the most beautiful drives in the world: The Road to the Isles. Starting at Fort William you will pass Neptune’s Staircase which is a flight of eight lochs designed by Thomas Telford forming a spectacular section of the Caledonian Canal. You will drive by lovely views on the road to Glenfinnan where you can park at the visitor centre and view the Glenfinnan Monument where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at the start of the Jacobite Rising in 1745 and in the other direction you will see the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct featured in the Harry Potter films. Maybe call in to The West Highland Railway Museum. Still a working railway station, the site offers a unique and hands-on introduction to West Highland railway heritage. The indoor exhibition provides interesting facts and stories about the spectacular Glenfinnan Viaduct and life on the West Highland, while the outdoor exhibits tell the story of a rural Scottish railway station over the last century.
