Woodhall Dean
-
Found at the edge of the Lammermuir Hills, Woodhall Dean is an ancient semi-natural woodland, dominated by sessile oak, a tree which 5000 years ago covered most of southern Scotland.
-
Now only found in large numbers in a few areas of Scotland, their importance has been recognised and Woodhall Dean is now a nature reserve managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust.
-
These magnificent ancient oaks aren’t the only attraction here, with the woodland floor being blanketed in blue and white from the blooming bluebells and ramsons in early summer, and Adders being prevalent between April and September.
-
There is a great circular walk around the reserve, but it is steep in places and can be muddy so may not be suitable for those requiring assistance.
-
As always leave no trace and help keep Scotland beautiful.

Culbin Forest
-
This once vast area of shifting sand dunes on the Moray coast was purchased by the Forestry Commission in 1920, and is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
-
There are some fantastic woodland trails here, the only waymarked trail, Hill 99 (roughly 3.5 miles), winds through the pine covered sand dunes to the viewing tower which sits atop Hill 99 and offers a unique ‘squirrel’s eye’ view over the forest and across the Moray Firth.
-
Stretching for over 8.5 miles, the forest is home to many animal and plant species, including nesting birds which should not be disturbed. The coastline is home to many seals who should be observed from a distance.
-
The area is perfect to explore on both foot and bike and there’s a paid car park, toilets, and picnic area on site.

Staffin Bay - Isle of Skye

Found on the northeast coast of the Trotternish peninsula, Staffin bay and the neighbouring An Corran Beach are a must for anyone visiting the Isle of Skye.

If the stunning landscape surrounding the bay wasn’t enough, the discovery in 2002 of fossilised Dinosaur footprints within the mudstone really stirs the imagination, making a trip to the bay a truly magical experience.

The bay is a mix of sand and flat rocks which is sheltered from the westerly Atlantic winds, making its a great place to stop for a family day out.

If the footprints are of a particular interest to you, we would recommend starting your adventure at the Staffin Ecomuseum, where you will find some fascinating information on the creatures that roamed before us.

As always, when visiting, please endeavour to tread lightly and leave no trace, ensuring the site remains just as you found it for whoever visits next.

Waterloo Tower
-
This 19th century hill tower is a common sight from much of the Borders, and was built to commemorate the Duke of Wellington's triumph over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.
-
The tower can be reached by a marked footpath, starting from Harestanes Visitor Centre, just off the B6400, a few hundred metres east of its intersection with the A68.
-
Although the tower interior is usually closed to the public, the key can be obtained from the Lothian Estates Office at Bonjedward for a small fee, allowing you access to the spiral staircase within, leading to the balcony at the top of the tower.
-
Even without access to the tower, the hill summit offers excellent views over the surrounding landscape and is an enjoyable and rewarding walk.

Invermoriston
-
This small hamlet, just a few miles from Fort Augustus in the highlands, is a great place to stop off and explore.
-
A short woodland walk takes you out at the River Morriston Falls where you will find a small stone hut providing shelter and views of the falls and bridges upriver.
-
The first bridge in view is a replacement bridge, built in 1933, but behind it lies a double arch bridge, one of nearly a thousand built by Thomas Telford between 1800 and 1819. Construction of the bridge took nearly 8 years at a loss of £2,000 for guarantor Sir John Campbell, blaming ‘languid and inattentive contractors’ and ‘idle workers’.
-
Please respect the stonework on the bridge and ensure it continues to stand the test of time.

Fyvie Castle
-
This expansive 800 year old Scottish Baronial Fortress lies in the heart of Aberdeenshire, with imposing towers on either side of its grand entrance, beautifully maintained grounds, and home to an impressive art collection, Fyvie Castle can be the main event of any family day out.
-
The Castle itself is steeped in history, legend, and folklore, with William the Lion residing here around 1214, and Robert the Bruce and Charles I also being distinguished Royal guests to have visited.
-
The grounds are as enchanting as the Raeburns and Romneys you will find hanging on the walls, with glass roofed racquet courts, a bowling alley, walled garden, and 18th century man-made lake to walk around.
-
Being managed by National Trust for Scotland, the facilities are very good, with tours, a shop and tea room all available.

Carsaig Arches
-
The Carsaig Arches are impressive sea arches located west of Carsaig on the Isle of Mull.
-
The path to the arches starts at the Carsaig Pier and is a difficult walk, over uneven terrain, boulders, and is exposed with steep drops, so should not be attempted by those not sure of foot.
-
The “Nun’s Cave” is reached first, a sandstone cave topped by basalt columns. The cave is thought to have sheltered the nuns from the Iona Abby when they fled during the reformation, and has a number of religious carvings dating back to the 6th century.
-
Finally, after another 2 hours walking you will reach the Carsaig Arches. The first arch is more easily accessible but the path to the 2nd arch is narrow and exposed so extreme care must be taken.
-
Retrace your steps to return to the starting point at Carsaig Pier.

Old Packhorse Bridge - Highlands

Old Packhorse Bridge is the oldest stone bridge in the Highlands, built between May and November 1717 to allow passage across the River Dulnain.

Brigadier-General Alexander Grant of Grant, Clan Chief, commissioned John Nicecelsone, a mason from Ballindaloch to build the bridge at Lynne of Dalrachney.

Before the bridge was built, crossing the river in spate was a major inconvenience for both travellers and locals, with burials at the nearby Church of Duthill often being delayed.

The bridge sustained damage during the great flood of 1829 but has survived to this day, a real testament to the craftsmanship that went into its’ construction.

There is ample parking just a short walk from the viewpoint in the village carpark at Carrbridge.

As always, when visiting, please endeavour to tread lightly and leave no trace, ensuring the site remains just as you found it for whoever visits next.
