The bus goes where railways can’t. Along cliff roads above the Atlantic, and through villages where the main stop is the post office. Or over alpine passes too steep for trains, into mountain towns that feel completely cut off from the rest of the world.

Your fellow passengers are a mix of tourists, schoolchildren, commuters, people carrying groceries home after market day. And the views from the window make up for the somewhat bumpy ride.

We’ve rounded up some of our favourite routes across the UK and Europe, from Cornwall’s Tin Coast to the high passes of the Swiss Alps.

top tip for adventuring by train with kids: pack as light as possible, using backpacks. Wheeled cafes and cobbled streets don’t go well together, and a comfortable backpack leaves hands free - always useful with kids in tow!

Amsterdam has banned advertisements for flights in public spaces, as part of a wider ban on fossil fuel advertising.

The move is motivated by the local government's environmental targets, looking to shift lifestyle choices to lower-carbon options.

This feels particularly poignant at a time when mindsets towards high-carbon travel are starting to shift, with fewer people defaulting to flying due to rising costs and disruption.

Do you think more spaces should ban fossil fuel adverts?

How to get extra annual leave days, with the Sustainable Travel Leave workplace policy.

For many people, opting for trains over flights can feel out of reach when the journey is longer. When you’ve got limited holiday days, spending one of them on travel can be hard to consider.

Sustainable Travel Leave, pioneered by , rewards employees with extra time-off for choosing low-carbon travel options on long-distance trips. At Byway, we’ve seen the impact firsthand, with many of our team enjoying the extra time on their own flight-free holidays.

To read more about the policy, and how to pitch it to your employer, comment TIME and we’ll send you our guide!

Once a year, on the first weekend of September, Lille transforms into Europe’s largest open-air flea market: the Braderie de Lille. You’re still in time to book for 2026 - in fact, now is the sweet spot for availability on the Eurostar (and no luggage limits for all your finds).

Comment “HATTY” and we’ll send you our Lille itineraries.

‘One night I was bored in bed, and made this trip for the internet’ 💜

Take that Eurostar to France. Become slightly too emotionally attached to Versailles. Run around the palace gardens to feel the most alive you’ve ever been (ok, maybe don’t actually run).

Especially when, from 22nd September 2026 to 24th January 2027, the Palace of Versailles is running an exhibition to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. It will showcase original costumes, storyboards, behind-the-scenes photographs and more. Consider this your ‘feminine intuition’ to book now, before everyone else does.

Comment ANGEL and we’ll send you the trip.
