What was your favourite mode of transport during the journey?

“The sleeper trains.

I’m a bit of a control freak, but there’s something about having such a long journey ahead without needing to get off or change trains that I really loved.

I took the SJ sleeper train from Hamburg to Stockholm, the EuroNight Chopin from Warsaw to Munich, and Intercity Notte sleeper trains between Milan and Lecce. Every time, it felt like a mental pause. Once you’re onboard, there’s nowhere to be and nothing to organise. You just let the journey happen.

You get breakfast delivered to your cabin, a wake-up call before your stop, and little touches like snacks, toiletries and an eye mask. It felt less like transport and more like a holiday within a holiday. One occasionally accompanied by a symphony of snoring, so pack earplugs!

I usually spend so much of a trip thinking about where I need to be next. Sleeper trains were one of the few times I genuinely switched off.”

"This photo sums up the trip for me, on a packed train that goes to Monaco. I was standing in the aisle with my camera, and in front of me was a family. The father was nodding off with his hand on his face, looking out at the ocean, while his daughter gazed out the window behind him. It encompassed that peaceful, slow travel feeling, even on a crowded train, there is so much beauty to observe."

From 2030, we could have more options for taking the train from the UK to Europe.

The Office of Rail and Road have approved Virgin Trains to run up to 20 daily return services between London and Paris, Brussels or Amsterdam. The agreement will run from 1st October 2030 to 31st December 2040, and covers the HS1 route.

This might be our best bad business move.

We’ve released a free course on how to DIY your own train trip across Europe.

The idea started with our Maps tool, which allows users to design their own overland route through Europe. Since launching at the start of the year, over 300,000 people have used it to dream up no-fly trips. Many book through us, but some don't.

We wondered what happened to all those trips, dreamed up but never booked. You might expect our focus to be, “why aren’t they booking with us?”, but our mission made us ask, “what if they wanted to book it themselves, but found out how complex it was and gave up?”.

We loved helping more people design overland journeys, whether booked with Byway or not. But with our understanding of the complexities of overland travel, we worried about the people who designed their dream trip, got overwhelmed by train networks, timetables and booking windows, and never got to travel. So we shared how to do it yourself.

What surprised you about train travel?

Amelia Le Brun: I usually prefer driving because I love a road trip and enjoy being in control. With train travel, I was worried about missing spots because you can't just pull over anywhere. However, what surprised me was using the train as a 'spot' itself. It frames the world, and you see incredible coastlines that you simply wouldn't experience the same way while driving. It helped me shift my mindset: instead of feeling like I had to tick off specific locations, I learned to just enjoy where the train took me.
