🌳 Out exploring today and came across something pretty special…

Today we stumbled across this incredible ancient oak on the Achnacarry Estate near Fort William — and what a tree it is.

This is believed to be the Skipinnish Oak, a remarkable old sessile oak thought to be at least 400 years old, with some estimates suggesting it could be up to 1,000 years old.

You can really see the age and character in it — massive limbs, a huge hollowing trunk, and so much wildlife living on and around it. There even seem to be other trees growing from the oak itself, likely started by seeds dropped by birds over the years, turning this one old tree into its own little ecosystem.

As a bit of fun, we tested the kids to see if they could name the different species growing out of it — and between us we spotted rowan, birch, holly, Sitka spruce and beech. Pretty amazing to see so much growing from one ancient tree.

We also spotted a really unusual fungus on the trunk, which looks to be Beefsteak Fungus 🍄 — a fascinating fungus known for its rich red colour and the fact it can appear to “bleed”.

As tree people, it’s always amazing to come across something like this. Trees like this aren’t just old — they’re living history, habitat, and a reminder of just how important it is to protect and appreciate our ancient trees.

Our mixed hardwood and softwood logs are sourced locally through our tree surgery work across Lochaber. Rather than letting good timber go to waste, we process it into quality firewood at a fair price.

⚠️ Limited stock available. Our firewood is produced from timber generated through our tree surgery work, Once our current stock has sold, there may be a wait until more is dry & becomes available.

Perfect for wood burners, open fires, fire pits and outdoor use.

Our newest team member, Seb, is currently undertaking his Lantra chainsaw and tree felling qualifications as part of his development with K Trees.

It's been abit hectic this last wee while and the weather's been fairly poor so not many pictures to put up. Also the wasps have made an appearance and have given me my first sting this year! I don't normally react to these but this one floored me with swollen hands and lips, nausea, and a stinker of a headache!

We would like to welcome Seb to the KTrees team. Seb joins us with a background in outdoor education and adventure travel, having guided clients in a variety of environments around the world. With a strong passion for the natural environment, he enjoys working outdoors and is now developing his practical skills and career within arboriculture. Seb is booked onto his training course this June as he begins his journey with the team.
