🌳 DID YOU KNOW? A Giant from California Grows in Our Churchyard! 🌳

Tucked into the graveyard of St Michael's Church, just a short stroll from the Market Hill, stands one of Framlingham's most remarkable — and often overlooked — natural landmarks: a magnificent Giant Redwood (Wellingtonia).

Despite its very English setting, this tree is a true American import. Giant Redwoods are native to the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, and were first brought to Britain in the 1850s as ornamental specimens, often planted in grand locations like churchyards and country estates. Local legend that "it came from America" turns out to be spot on!

📏 Just how big is it?
Tree recorders have been tracking its growth for years, and the numbers are staggering:

2004: girth of 4.7m

2012: height 26.9m, girth 5.18m

2020: height 34.15m (that's over 112ft!) with a girth of 5.53m

Between 2004 and 2008 alone, its girth grew by 7 inches — a reminder of just how vigorously these giants thrive in the English climate, far from home.

Standing in an open spot, unshaded by neighbouring trees, it's considered one of the finest examples of its kind anywhere in England. 🌲

Next time you're passing St Michael's, look up — you're standing beside a living piece of California, with roots (quite literally) going back to Victorian Framlingham! 🇺🇸➡️🇬🇧
