Encountering wildlife is all part of the highlands experience, and it’s rare not to spot deer at some point on a trip. But this is the first time we’ve seen them here, just above the foreshore in Badachro. They may have been paying a social call on the otters that we occasionally encounter around the mouth of the burn.

Here I am, bobbing in the water of Kerry Bay in my grandmother’s beautiful old clinker-built dinghy, round the coast from Badachro. We were all taught to row as soon as our arms were long enough. They have filters these days to make a photo look like it was taken in the ‘70s - slightly fuzzy and with a warm orange glow. But this is how I remember it too. I no longer sport the bowl cut. But there’s still no better place to be.

LATE AVAILABILITY: Discover the beauty of the Scottish highlands from our lovely, traditional stone-built cottage, with breathtaking views across the sea to the hills. Spring is always the first season to book out, usually by returning guests. But this year we have a cancellation for the w/c 3 May. This is the blue bedroom, with its vintage wallpaper, and antique furniture, very much in keeping with the age of the cottage. Cosy and comfortable, it is made for slow mornings, with a cup of tea and the book you have probably been meaning to read for ever. But the view from the sash window across Badachro bay to the hills beyond may well drag you out of bed and off on the day’s adventure.

Obviously we’re biased, but we’re not the only ones who think Rose Cottage is special. The lovely guests who were there last week, and the lovely guests who are in right now, both booked again for next year while they were still there! We do have a lot of guests who return year after year. Perhaps it’s the combination of breathtaking highland scenery, endlessly varied things to do, and a peaceful, cosy cottage to return to at the end of the day. Whatever it is, it’s hard to resist. What are you waiting for?

No food miles were involved for this lunch in Rose Cottage garden. Delicious, freshly caught langoustines from Dry Island, Scottish Highlands deserved delicious, freshly made mayonnaise. The eggs for the mayo came from our friend who keeps the cottage so clean and well loved for us between guests. The view is available year round.
