Name the whale ๐
Fancy naming a humpback whale?
We're running a wee competition to name the humpback that was in Loch Broom by Ullapool for 39 days over Christmas.
We have been chatting to Happywhale and Lyndsay from the Scottish ID catalogue, and have been given permission to name the humpback. The name will go onto the national and international ID catalogues and remain with it for life, as it hopefully travels the world and returns to our waters.
Names can be suggested in the comments below this post. At the end of the month, a team of 5 judges will select a name each, and these will be put to a public vote. The winning name will be added to the catalogues, and the 4 runners up will receive a wee prize each.
We'll also try highlighting some of the work that goes into monitoring these amazing animals and the people and groups involved.
Prizes:
Winning name: added to both catalogues.
Runners up: tickets for Shearwater Cruises, Ullapool, , EcoKins Humpback Whale soft toy, and a drinking bottle.
Judges: .talbot.353 Ullapool fisherman and owner of Seascape. Noel Hawkins guide on Shearwater Cruises, Ullapool and volunteer with Ullapool Sea Savers, Kat Bruce from The Protected Areas Foundation, Cal Major - Ocean Advocate paddlebparder/presenter/, Lyndsay Mcneill form the Scottish ID catalogue.
This post will be pinned. Please only submit name suggestions in comments. Share about if you know any kids' groups, schools, nature clubs and whale fans who might want to join in.
Although free to enter, if anyone would like to donate even one or two pounds towards this, any funds raised will go to Happywhale to help with the costs of running the database and supporting other whale charities. Donations can be made at: https://gofund.me/b708e7a3a
Winner decided in April. If the same name suggestions are made, the first one entered will be selected, no (ABSOLUTELY NO) WhaleyMcWhaleface, and variations thereof...
Put your waterproof thinking hats on, and send us your best suggestions - with reasons for name - and any pictures you may have got of the humpback whilst here. ๐๐ณ๐๐ณ
