As part of his £2.43 million donation to 22 animal charities from his Mortality tour, Ricky Gervais donated £150,000 to Animals Asia, the organisation leading the campaign to end bear bile farming in Vietnam, where bears are kept in tiny crush cages for decades and have bile extracted from their gallbladders through open wounds. 🐻💛🏥

Bear bile farming affects an estimated 10,000 bears across Asia, primarily moon bears and sun bears. The animals are typically kept in cages so small they cannot stand or turn around, for periods of up to 30 years. Vietnam has committed to ending the practice entirely, with Animals Asia working to rescue the remaining farmed bears and rehabilitate them at sanctuaries.

The money from Gervais's donation directly funds rescue operations, veterinary rehabilitation, and the long-term sanctuary care of bears that have spent their entire lives in cages and must be slowly reintroduced to natural behaviours.

Ricky Gervais has described bear bile farming as one of the cruellest practices on earth. His cheque is proof he means it.
