Quite!
Recently I've seen several posts from people running 'spiritual' retreats in Glastonbury asking for free accommodation for their attendees. One even offered a magical amulet in exchange. Another post sought a local female photographer to do a photo shoot in exchange for coming to the event.
It may come as a suprise to some that magic beans and fairy dust are not currency in this town. If you think Glastonbury is a special place then have some respect for those of us who live and work here. There are many people who put a lot of work into looking after the town, much of it unpaid, don't exploit that by coming here and not giving back. Cultivate relationships with people in the town, don't post cheeky requests on local community Facebook groups unless you're looking for a sarcastic response.
The housing situation is dire in this town. Many people who were brought up here can't afford the rents for a dwindling stock of properties, some of those serving you in the shops and cafes are homeless. This is partly due to the need to accommodate so many visitors. The town needs visitors to support the local economy, when those visitors think they are so special that they shouldn't have to contribute it's quite frankly infuriating. Particularly since those that come to town with a sense of entitlement and belief in their spiritual superiority are frequently rude to those serving them.
As for offering free attendance to your event to locals in exchange, I have several points. 1. If you want a professional to do a job then you have to admit them to do it, that is not payment. 2. There are plenty of local people hosting events here already, believe me your 'reiki unicorn goddess cacao healing weekend' is nothing new. 3. If you're offering to connect people to this sacred land of Avalon when your own connection to it pretty tenuous then that's really not on.
Glastonbury welcomes pilgrims, it welcomes those who want to give back. It's not a cosmic money pit for your personal enrichment. If you want a relationship with this place then start asking what you can do for Glastonbury, not what it can do for you.
