After walking out from Balmurrie Farm, then up and down across windswept, lonely moors, past the neolithic tumbled-stone remnants of the large burial chamber know as Carn na Gath (Cairn of the Cat) and then picking our way through the wet bogs in the middle of Kilgallioch Forest, we reached a favourite spot to rest at Purgatory Burn. In medieval times, lepers would make their final journey across the burn to spend their final days further a few miles on at the Wells of The Rees. This was named Purgatory as the lepers were never allowed to return once they'd crossed over the burn.
