One of the biggest mistakes I see when people are planning a USA multi-centre is trying to fit too much in.

I completely understand why.

The USA is huge, there are so many places people want to see, and often they don’t know when they’ll be back.

But trying to squeeze New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Orlando into two weeks usually means spending more time in airports than actually enjoying the places you’ve travelled so far to see.

I think it’s usually better to do fewer places properly.

Spend enough time somewhere to get a feel for it, enjoy it and experience more than just the main tourist attractions.

That’s why I often look at how destinations fit together rather than simply how many places can be included.

For example, New York and Boston work really well together. So do Las Vegas and a fly-drive through the National Parks. Or California as a trip in its own right.

You don’t have to see everything in one go.

In fact, the trips people tend to enjoy most are often the ones where they’ve left themselves enough time to actually enjoy where they are.

Today I celebrate 15 years as a Travel Counsellor ❤️.

36 years ago I walked into my first travel role with a desk, a phone and a pile of brochures. No online check-in, no travel apps, no social media, and certainly no virtual boarding passes.

Fast forward to today:

You can compare cabins and hotel rooms in seconds.
Your tickets sit neatly on your phone.
Flight times and gate changes update in real time.

Amid all this change, my role has only become more important. My 15 years with Travel Counsellors and 36 years in the industry mean I can cut through the noise, guide you to the right choices and be here when you need help most.

Working with me means:

- A trusted point of contact, not a call centre queue.

- Honest advice based on real experience.

- Someone who cares as much about your holiday as you do.

To my loyal clients, thank you for letting me be part of your travels. If you are planning a special trip and want to feel truly looked after from start to finish, I am here to help.

What’s the best scenery you’ve ever seen on a trip?

For me, it’s a difficult choice.

The drive from Johannesburg to Kruger surprised me far more than I expected, and parts of Sri Lanka were absolutely stunning.

I’m always a bit jealous of people seeing somewhere incredible for the first time. Whether it’s mountains, coastlines, lakes, wildlife or just a view you weren’t expecting, those moments tend to stay with you long after the holiday is over.

I’d love to know yours.

I remember the first time I realised travel days could actually be part of the experience.

For a long time, I probably thought like most people do. The flight, train, ferry or transfer was just the bit you had to get through before the holiday started.

Then I started doing more touring and multi-centre trips and realised that wasn’t always the case.

Some of the journeys themselves ended up being some of the most memorable parts of the trip.

The train winding through incredible scenery. The ferry ride between islands. A road journey where you spend half the time staring out of the window because the views are so good.

I still remember travelling from Johannesburg to Kruger and expecting it to be nothing more than a transfer. Instead, the scenery was so stunning it felt like part of the holiday before we’d even arrived.

That’s probably one of the reasons I enjoy planning multi-centre trips so much.

When they’re put together properly, the travelling doesn’t feel like lost time. It becomes part of the experience itself.

And sometimes those are the bits you end up talking about just as much when you get home.

One travel experience that completely lived up to the hype for me was New York.

For years, I avoided it.

I worried I’d spend all that money getting there only to find it didn’t live up to everything I’d seen on TV, in films and online.

I thought it might be one of those places that couldn’t possibly be as good as everyone said it was.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

I’ve now been three times and absolutely love it.

There’s just something about the atmosphere. The energy, the iconic sights, the different neighbourhoods, the feeling that there’s always something going on.

And every time I’ve visited, I’ve found something new.

I think that’s what surprised me most. Even though it’s one of the most talked about cities in the world, it still managed to exceed my expectations.

It’s one of the few places I’ve visited where I was worried the reality wouldn’t match the reputation.

Thankfully, it did.

City first or beach first?

For me, it almost always depends on the destination, but more often than not, I’d choose city first and beach second.

I like getting out and exploring while I’m still full of energy. Walking around somewhere new, seeing the sights, finding places to eat, learning a bit about the destination and making the most of being there.

Then once I’ve done that, I can properly relax.

There’s something quite nice about finishing a trip knowing you’ve got a few days by the pool, on the beach or somewhere quieter before heading home.

That said, there are always exceptions.

Some destinations naturally work better in a different order, and that’s why I don’t think there’s ever a one-size-fits-all answer.

It’s also one of the reasons I enjoy planning multi-centre trips so much. Small changes to the order of a trip can completely change how it feels.

You could visit exactly the same places but come home with a very different impression of the holiday.

For me, getting the order right is often just as important as choosing the destinations in the first place.

I think people underestimate how much the order of a trip changes how it feels.

Most people naturally focus on where they want to go, which makes sense. But once you’ve chosen the destinations, the order you do them in can make a huge difference.

Take a trip with a city, some sightseeing and a few days relaxing.

You could start with the beach, then move to a busy city before flying home.

Or you could do it the other way around, explore first and then finish somewhere you can properly switch off.

Exactly the same destinations, but a completely different experience.

It’s something I think about a lot when planning multi-centre trips.

Not just what someone wants to see, but how the trip will actually feel while they’re travelling it.

Sometimes moving one stop, adding an extra night somewhere, or changing the order completely can transform an itinerary.

Because the best trips aren’t usually the ones with the most destinations.

They’re the ones where everything fits together naturally and leaves you wanting more rather than feeling exhausted.

For me, that’s often what makes the difference between a good trip and a great one.

If I had 2 weeks in Croatia, I probably wouldn’t spend all of it in one place.

For me, Croatia is one of those countries that works best when you experience a few different areas because they all have their own character.

I’d probably start with a few days in Dubrovnik. Yes, it’s popular, but there’s a reason for that. The Old Town is beautiful, the coastline is stunning, and it’s a great introduction to the country.

From there, I’d head to one of the islands for a few days. Hvar is probably the one most people know, but there are plenty of others depending on what you’re looking for.

Then I’d finish around Split and the surrounding area. You’ve got history, great restaurants, beautiful coastline and easy access to places like Trogir and Krka National Park.

What I like about Croatia is that moving between places is part of the experience rather than a chore. The ferry journeys are scenic, the distances are manageable, and every stop feels a bit different from the last.

Could you stay in one place for two weeks? Absolutely.

But I think Croatia is one of those destinations where a little bit of moving around gives you a much better feel for the country.

That’s why it’s one of my favourite places for a multi-centre trip.

Why do some trips feel exciting from start to finish… while others leave you feeling like you need another holiday to recover?

I don’t think it’s usually the destination.

More often than not, it’s how the trip has been put together.

I’ve seen people spend two weeks racing around trying to fit everything in, only to come home feeling exhausted. Then I’ve seen others visit just as many places but come back talking about how much they loved every minute.

The difference is usually in the planning.

How long you stay somewhere, how often you’re moving, whether the travel days are realistic, and making sure there is actually time to enjoy a place rather than just ticking it off a list.

I’m definitely more of a “see everything” traveller, but even I know there comes a point where adding one more stop doesn’t make a trip better.

Sometimes the best itineraries aren’t the ones with the most destinations.

They’re the ones that get the balance right.

That’s usually what I’m thinking about when I put a trip together. Not just where someone wants to go, but how to make sure they enjoy getting there too.
