Secret Strathspey

Secret Strathspey Explore the hidden history of the Strathspey area on a guided walking tour.

Walks will include a chance to walk in the footsteps of a 18th century highlander by learning about how they lived and foraging edible and medicinal plants as they would have done. About me:

I am a former secondary school History and Religious Education teacher from Sussex, England. I moved up to the Cairngorms recently with my wife and two young children and fell in love with the stories and leg

ends of the strathspey area. I have Outdoor Emergency First Aid qualification with BASP and Public Liability Insurance.

And that's a wrap!

My family and I are moving out of Strathspey and into a croft in Moray. Its always been our dream to farm ever since we first came up to Scotland after watching This Farming Life with the wonderful woman of Lynbreck Croft. We now embark on our mission to become more sustainable by living from the land.

Thanks to all those who have supported and come on the guided walks over the past year. Its been a great joy to guide locals around the history of their back yard and visitors with links to the area.

But this is not the end and I will be back with some Secret Moray walks in the future.

Lovely afternoon journey to Ardclach, just south of Nairn, on the River Findhorn.

A visit to the unique Bell Tower, originally built as a watchtower by the Brodie family after their estates were ransacked by Montrose. On the first floor is the watch house with musket holes and on the ground floor, a windowless prison. It was later converted into the Bell Tower for the church at the bottom of the valley.

A fascinating memorial to the first Scottish missionary to India, Donald Mitchell, the son of the minister here who was an officer in the Army at Bombay before becoming a missionary but died within the first year of his service.

In the graveyard of the picturesque Ardclach Church is the unassuming grave of the Nobel Prize winner and Order of Merit recipient, Sir James Whyte Black, who without his work in medicine we would not have Beta Blockers. His work has saved countless lives.

On Tuesday 9th August : Secret Backharn Valley Guided Walk

This 3 hour guided walk (including breaks) will start at the medieval Castle Roy, Nethy Bridge with its connections to the infamous Wolf of Badenoch, before walking past the elegant Aultmore House. Hear stories from the local folklore of an ambush of cattle thieves in the Backharn valley, the evil white serpent and fairy changelings.
The walk will also include an opportunity to forage for seasonal wild food, just as highlanders did through the centuries.

Walk 6.3km, on mainly gravel paths, some uneven sections and steep climb to the valley viewpoint.

Price: Adults: £15, Under 16s: £5, Under 5s: Free, Family Price: £30
