We are delighted to confirm that the Guildford Town Guides Charity of the Year 2025 will be Phyllis Tuckwell, Hospice Care

Phyllis Tuckwell provides palliative and end of life care for local patients who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer. Every day they support over 250 patients, relatives and carers, through medical and nursing care, therapies, counselling, social work advice and practical support. As the NHS/Government only cover 25% of their costs, they have to raise over £25,000 every day to provide their services, which are given free of charge to patients and their families and carers.

I spent a glorious 90 minutes walking around our historic town centre with Nick from Guildford Town Guides earlier this week. Nick showed me the town's nooks and crannies and related the stories associated with them.

Four famous local historical figures dominated our tour:

▪️George Abbot, a 17th Century Archbishop of Canterbury
▪️John Russell,18th Century artist who was Mayor of Guildford four times
▪️Lewis Carroll, writer (and what a delight finding the Alice in Wonderland garden hidden in Guildford Castle grounds!)
▪️Ex Christchurch ward resident, Alan Turing father of computing science.

If you have a couple of hours spare it is well worth booking onto one of these walking tours via www.guildfordwalks.org.uk. Walks are free so are available to all. Including everyone is important. Groups can book a private tour for a small fee.
