Did you know there’s a piece of Guisborough in the British Museum? 🏛️

Back in 1864, a Roman cavalry helmet was dug up near the town. Beautifully decorated — engraved and embossed, far too ornate for the battlefield — it’s thought to have been made for ceremonial displays and cavalry tournaments rather than combat. It’s now known as the Guisborough Helmet, and you can see it in the British Museum’s Roman Britain gallery.

The strangest part? It was buried folded up, on its own, nowhere near any known Roman site. Nobody has ever worked out why.

Did you know Roseberry Topping hasn’t always looked like that? ⛰️

That famous half-cone shape — the one people compare to the Matterhorn, and not bad for North Yorkshire — isn’t natural at all.

Back in 1912, a geological fault, likely made worse by centuries of alum and ironstone mining underneath, caused part of the original summit to collapse. What was left is the profile we all know now: the one you can pick out from miles away, the one that tells you you’re nearly home.

So the most recognisable landmark on our skyline is, in a way, an accident — and a reminder of the mining history that shaped this whole area.

Did you know Gisborough Priory was one of the very last monasteries in the entire country to close? 🏛️

It surrendered on Christmas Eve, 1539. Imagine that — Henry VIII’s commissioners at the door, and the canons handing over a place that had stood since 1119. Right at the end of a process that had swept the rest of England, our priory was still holding on.

And it was no small thing to lose. At its peak it was the fourth-richest monastery in all of Yorkshire. Not bad for our little town.

The ruins you can wander round today are the Gothic rebuild that followed a fire in 1289 — over 900 years of history still standing at the end of Church Street.

(And yes — the Priory is spelled without the “u”, even though the town has one. A quirk that catches everyone out.)

A large bumblebee sitting motionless on a cold stone in February or March is not dying. It is a queen running low on fuel between flowers. 🐝

She is the only survivor of last year’s colony. All the workers died in autumn. She hibernated alone underground for months and emerged with just enough reserves to start again from nothing. A queen resting on cold ground in early spring is not giving up — she is refuelling.

What to do:

Slide a piece of paper gently under her and move her to the nearest open flower — crocus, dandelion, hellebore, p***y willow, anything in bloom.

No flowers within reach? Place a single drop of sugar water close to her head: equal parts white sugar and warm water. Never honey — it can carry disease harmful to wild bees.

Leave her somewhere sheltered for fifteen minutes, away from wind and direct sun. If she is alive and hungry, she will extend her proboscis on her own.

Never bring her indoors. Warmth without food is lethal.

Plant early-flowering species now: crocus, snowdrop, hellebore, and p***y willow are open when queens emerge and almost nothing else is. Leave dandelions until May — they are the refuelling stations that matter most in the weeks when it counts.

One queen becomes a colony of hundreds by midsummer. The flower she lands on next is where it all begins 🌸
