This is a lovely watch to get an overview of the coast to coast route near Watercrag and Gunnerside.

Julia Bradbury traverses Swaledale in Yorkshire. Wainwright studied this 22-mile section in detail, presenting a route of valley bottom and windswept moor top.

Perfect walk from Watercrag!

When God made Gunnerside Gill, he really did turn the beauty up to 11 - a proper cut through the moor, with the beck twisting down the bottom and the sides rising up like they mean it.

What I love about this gill is it isn’t just scenery. Look closer and you start spotting the marks left behind - old tracks, stonework, and the kind of scars you only get in places that once had industry tucked into every fold of the hillside.

From the air it all lines up perfectly - the winding water, the patchwork of heather and grass, and that lonely little ruin sitting down on the valley floor like it’s waiting for someone to come back with a key.

It’s the sort of view that makes you stop talking for a minute. Then you remember you’re in Swaledale, so you get on with it and pretend you weren’t impressed.

We've not explored this local spot yet. It would be a spectacular walk and I think should be followed by refreshment at The Punch Bowl Inn before return to Gunnerside.
