Huntington Castle: Legends, History & Living Heritage ⚔️

Step into Huntington Castle, a stunning 17th‑century fortress in Clonegal, County Carlow, Ireland. This historic castle was built in 1625 by Sir Robert Esmonde, laying the foundation for centuries of stories, intrigue, and noble life.

✨ Sir Lawrence Esmonde, his descendant, became a key figure in Ireland’s turbulent history, serving under Queen Elizabeth I and King James I, and earning the title, Lord Esmonde.

💘 Sir Lawrence married Ailish O’Flaherty, granddaughter of Ireland’s legendary Pirate Queen, Grace O’Malley (Gráinne Ní Mháille), a fearless leader of the seas whose daring exploits are still remembered today. He was given peerage in Conegal and, during this time, the castle remained mainly a garrison, protecting the Dublin-Wexford trade route along the river Derry.

🌿 Today, the castle is a living home, carefully preserved by the Durdin Robertson family. Alexander and Clare Durdin Robertson, together with their sons, welcome visitors to explore the castle, wander the formal gardens, and experience a unique piece of Irish heritage.
