As the Easter holidays begin, ourselves and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team are encouraging everyone heading into the great outdoors to be ‘Adventure Smart’ and enjoy the stunning landscapes of Northumberland safely and responsibly.
With longer days and the promise of spring sunshine, the park is a magnet for walkers, cyclists and families seeking adventure.
However, conditions in the hills can still be unpredictable, and even experienced outdoor enthusiasts can find themselves caught out.
Our Team Leader, Jamie Pattison, said:
“We want everyone to enjoy the beautiful scenery our national park has to offer this Easter, but also to return home safely. Taking a few simple precautions before setting out can prevent a fun day from turning into an emergency. Check the weather, plan your route, and make sure you have the right gear – even in spring, conditions on the hilltops can be very different from those in the valleys.”
Keith Briggs, Team Leader for North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team, has added:
“Our teams are on call 24/7, 365 days a year, and we’re always here to help – but prevention is better than rescue. The Adventure Smart advice is a great place to start. A well-prepared trip is a safer trip, and that means knowing your limits, letting someone know your plans, and taking a fully charged mobile phone with a backup power supply. Remember, you do need our help, dial 999, ask for the Police and then Mountain Rescue.”
Top Easter Adventure Smart Tips:
From the Adventure Smart UK website, here are some key tips to stay safe this Easter:
Check the weather: Conditions can change rapidly, especially in upland areas. Be prepared for wind, rain, and cold even on a sunny morning.
Choose the right gear: Wear sturdy footwear and take layers, including a waterproof. Don’t forget a hat and gloves – windchill is still a real risk in April.
Know your route: Carry a map and compass, and make sure you know how to use them. Don’t rely solely on your phone or GPS.
Tell someone: Always let someone know where you're going and when you expect to be back.
Take a power bank: A phone is your lifeline in an emergency – make sure it stays charged.
