We’re very pleased to say that we’ve been awarded funding from the Haltwhistle Community Shops Fund to run a series of workshops for the good people of Haltwhistle this summer 🌞

The fund has accumulated thanks to the volunteers who have been running the Haltwhistle Partnership’s community charity shops in town - and we feel very privileged to have been awarded a share of what they’ve raised with their efforts.

Our grant will be subsidising a series of 5 workshops held both here and at venues in town. Tickets will cost just £5 for each session, with a proportion of tickets being free of charge for those experiencing severe financial barriers. We are prioritising all tickets for members of community groups in Haltwhistle before they go on general sale.

Dates, activities and special guest artists to be confirmed soon!

Current picks from the Green Room Library…

It is peak walking season - the Wall (and Bridge House) is teeming with explorers putting one foot in front of the other - so of course I had to choose a few of our favourite walking-themed books!

While we’ve plenty of guidebooks, maps and technical skills guides - this selection is more to do with the stories and philosophies of walking; meditation, place, identity, land access, alternative viewpoints, encounters with wild beings, and winding lines cutting through layers of history.

The selection includes titles by:

Of course, we are avid hillwalkers ourselves too - on a rare day off on Sunday, Lydia and Ed could be found on Skiddaw, one of our nearest Lakeland fells ⛰️

Heading into the hills this Bank Holiday weekend?

to carry a paper map – even if you’re using a phone app.

Phones run out of battery. Signals drop. Screens crack. A paper map or splashmap never needs charging and doesn’t care about the weather.

Before you go, ask yourself three simple AdventureSmart questions:
1. Am I confident I have the skills for the day?
2. Do I know what the weather will be like?
3. Do I have the right gear?

A backup map is just one smart move that could save you a lot of trouble.

Stay safe. Plan ahead. And if it feels wrong, don’t go.

The curlew is also a characteristic bird of Northumberland national park and its distinctive call can be heard daily here from Spring onwards 🪶

All you have to do is stop outside and listen for a few minutes 😌

Happy World Curlew Day!

Today we’re celebrating some good news for Curlews in Orkney, thanks to the work of the Orkney Native Wildlife Project.

The results of the project’s monitoring report from 2024 show that, after suffering large declines, the number of breeding Curlews has increased across the islands.

Curlew numbers have increased 21% between 2019 and 2024, and last year saw chicks hatching from a record-breaking 82% of Curlew nests monitored!

This is brilliant news for these Scottish icons.

The project helps these birds and other native wildlife by removing invasive non-native Stoats, which eat Curlew eggs and chicks as they nest on the ground.

As the Easter holidays begin, ourselves and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team are encouraging everyone heading into the great outdoors to be ‘Adventure Smart’ and enjoy the stunning landscapes of Northumberland safely and responsibly.

With longer days and the promise of spring sunshine, the park is a magnet for walkers, cyclists and families seeking adventure.

However, conditions in the hills can still be unpredictable, and even experienced outdoor enthusiasts can find themselves caught out.
Our Team Leader, Jamie Pattison, said:
“We want everyone to enjoy the beautiful scenery our national park has to offer this Easter, but also to return home safely. Taking a few simple precautions before setting out can prevent a fun day from turning into an emergency. Check the weather, plan your route, and make sure you have the right gear – even in spring, conditions on the hilltops can be very different from those in the valleys.”

Keith Briggs, Team Leader for North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team, has added:
“Our teams are on call 24/7, 365 days a year, and we’re always here to help – but prevention is better than rescue. The Adventure Smart advice is a great place to start. A well-prepared trip is a safer trip, and that means knowing your limits, letting someone know your plans, and taking a fully charged mobile phone with a backup power supply. Remember, you do need our help, dial 999, ask for the Police and then Mountain Rescue.”

Top Easter Adventure Smart Tips:
From the Adventure Smart UK website, here are some key tips to stay safe this Easter:

Check the weather: Conditions can change rapidly, especially in upland areas. Be prepared for wind, rain, and cold even on a sunny morning.

Choose the right gear: Wear sturdy footwear and take layers, including a waterproof. Don’t forget a hat and gloves – windchill is still a real risk in April.

Know your route: Carry a map and compass, and make sure you know how to use them. Don’t rely solely on your phone or GPS.

Tell someone: Always let someone know where you're going and when you expect to be back.

Take a power bank: A phone is your lifeline in an emergency – make sure it stays charged.

Call Out❗️

On Saturday afternoon, a call out was received from North East Ambulance Service to ourselves and Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team for a casualty in cardiac arrest near Melkridge, Haltwhistle area.

Local members were contacted to support the incident, as it wasn't clear whether the ambulance crew would be able to reach the casualty.

A couple of local members reached the incident and the rest of the team were able to be stood down. It was confirmed that the ambulance crew had vehicle access, and were going to transfer the casualty to the ambulance to transport them to hospital.

At this point the crew had successfully resuscitated the casualty, helped by bystander CPR taking place before the ambulance crew arrived. We hope they go on to make a full recovery.

Please like, comment and share to raise awareness of Mountain Rescue teams and the importance of knowing how to perform CPR.
