This week's photos are of a recently completed cottage renovation, in which we took the long-neglected property back to bare brick and re-invented the space for modern living.

Work is progressing on our "rural retreat" which is having a new dining extension and full renovation of the existing longhouse. A huge corner window captures stunning countryside views, from where the client will be able to enjoy glorious sunsets. A wrap around terrace will allow outdoor dining also taking in the view. A large rooflight lets daylight deep into the centre of the new dining space and the kitchen in the existing building. Upstairs, reconfigured bedrooms and a new master bedroom suite, complete with walk in wardrobe and ensuite completes this part of the build.

A CLEVER ADDITION MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE

CWA recently completed the renovation and extension of this tired and cramped house near Harlech. Our client bought the house to create a new home following a move to the area. The existing rooms were small and dark and unsuitable for modern living – the kitchen was small and felt like a corridor between the back door and the rest of the house, and the two further ground floor rooms were small and inflexible with a contorted circulation layout.

We designed a new wrap-around extension, connected to one of the ground floor rooms, to create a large open plan kitchen, dining living space. The second ground floor room was converted into a cosy snug with a log-burning stove, and the tiny original kitchen became a useful utility room. The extension was constructed using timber frame, stone and timber cladding and a slate roof to give a low impact, visually appealing appearance.

Our latest project to use natural material extensively in the construction is making good progress on site. The walls of this kitchen extension are timber framed, infilled with Hempcrete blocks, finished with lime render and plaster on wood-wool boards The roof is also timber framed with the same Hempcrete blocks used as insulation, and again lime plaster on wood-wool boards.

Stunning drive through the peaks of Snowdonia to visit our new low carbon project. We're rebuilding a 70s kitchen extension using natural, breathable materials wherever possible - timber frame walls and roof, insulated with Hempcrete blocks and sheep's wool. The original extension was damp and cold, whereas the new extension will be warm, and will deal with moisture and humidity naturally by being breathable. Very excited to be working with some great people, pushing forward a more natural way to build.

Another milestone reached at our eco-cottage refurbishment. Last week saw the installation of the Hempcrete wall insulation, made from entirely natural products. Hempcrete is a carbon-negative material that locks away more carbon for the lifetime of the building than is used in it's manufacture.

The ultimate lock down project? Called in to see how our self-build eco-renovation of a traditional Welsh cottage is going. This week's milestone is the laying of the recycled glass floor insulation, which comes as lightweight "nuggets". Next will be the underfloor heating and air source heat pump followed by h**p insulation of the walls.

Popped in last week to see how this local self build renovation is going... we designed the new layout and did basic construction details for the builder-client to use. The main construction work is done and the fit out will soon be starting.

Reduce Reuse Recycle....a new idea in architecture...no new buildings?

The energy already embodied in the built environment is a precious unnatural resource. It’s time to start treating it like one.

Work has recently started on our low impact re-build of a traditional cottage. Using a mix of sheep's wool, Hempcrete and recycled foamed glass insulation, timber sourced from the surrounding estate, and solar PV and air source heating, the project aims to source materials locally, and to minimise fossil fuels in use. We're interested to hear from anyone contemplating a similar approach for possible collaborations.
