Hospitality sector challenges new packaging tax 📦

The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme, could impose millions in additional costs on businesses...and then onto customers.

Under EPR, hospitality venues may face charges for packaging deemed as 'household waste,' despite it being disposed of commercially on-site. This misclassification results in a double charge —businesses paying both the EPR and commercial waste disposal levy.

Leading hospitality companies, including Azzurri Group, Burger King UK, and Fuller's, have joined UKHospitality in urging the government to exempt hospitality businesses from these fees, highlighting the unfair financial burden and potential price increases for consumers.

But the number of pubs in England and Wales has sadly fallen below 39,000 for first time since 2021 - with more than 400 pubs in England & Wales shut their doors for good last year against a backdrop of rising costs and cautious spending among consumers (that's around 34 pubs every month!)

Chefs push for better mental health support 🧠

Hospitality firms are being urged to do more to support chefs in their kitchens with their mental health after one says there is still a stigma around the issue.

Sam Sears, deputy head chef at the Edgbaston Park Hotel, Birmingham, said the demands of his role affected his life.

"It can be very stressful... long hours, missing out on family social events because of work," he added.

Having been supported by The Burnt Chef Project, an organisation set up to raise awareness of mental health in the industry, Mr Sears said he was now part of their efforts.
