Your visa cover letter is not supposed to be a long story about your life. No nah!

I see people write cover letters that are almost like a full autobiography, and honestly, that is not the point.

Your visa cover letter should simply help the visa officer understand your trip.

Tell them why you are travelling, where you are going, when you intend to travel, what you plan to do there, who is paying for the trip, and why you will return home after the trip.

If there are things in your application that may need explanation, such as a recent change of job, a large deposit in your account, or a previous visa refusal, this is also where you can explain them clearly.

The goal is not to impress the visa officer with big grammar. Not at all!

The goal is to make your application clear, consistent and easy to understand.

So before you start writing plenty plenty things, ask yourself:

"If I were the visa officer, would this letter help me understand this person's trip?"

If the answer is no, abeg edit am oooo.

If you are travelling through another country before getting to your final destination, please do not assume that because you are only “connecting”, you do not need a visa.

Some countries require a separate transit visa, depending on your nationality, how long your layover is, the airport you are passing through, and whether you need to leave the international transit area.

For example, your flight may have a connection in a country where you need to change airports or collect and check in your luggage again. In that case, you may need to pass through immigration, and that can mean you need a visa.

Imagine getting to the airport, checking in successfully, and then being denied boarding because you do not have the visa required for your connecting country. That is the kind of travel problem nobody wants.

So before booking your flight, especially when the ticket has one or more stops, check the visa and transit requirements for every country on your itinerary.

If you’re self-employed and planning to apply for a visa, your application may look a little different from someone who works a regular 9–5 job.

It doesn’t mean getting a visa is harder. You simply need to properly prove your source of income and business activities.

For someone who is employed, documents like an employment letter, payslips and bank statements can help show where the money comes from.

But if you’re self-employed, the visa officer may want to know:

👉 What exactly do you do?
👉 How long have you been doing it?
👉 How much do you earn?
👉 Is the business actually operating?
👉 Where does the money in your account come from?
👉 Can you afford the trip?

This is why simply having a large amount of money in your account may not be enough.

And please, don’t suddenly move a large amount of money into your account just because you want to apply for a visa. If the money cannot be properly explained, it may raise questions instead of helping your application.

So, if you’re self-employed, don’t prepare your application exactly like someone who is employed. Prepare it around your own financial and business situation.

Got your admission but you’re not sure whether to defer it or just start late? 🤔

This is something many students face, especially when their visa, finances, documents or travel plans are not ready on time.

So, which one should you choose?

Start late if your school allows it and you’re only going to miss a few days or weeks. This can be a better option if you can still catch up with classes and your admission will remain valid.

But if you know you won’t be able to arrive within the allowed period, deferring your admission may be the safer option. You can move your admission to a later intake and have more time to sort out your visa, finances and other arrangements properly.

One important thing though: don’t just assume that you can start late. Check with your school first. Also, if you already have a visa, make sure the change will not affect your visa conditions.

Sometimes, rushing to start late can create more problems than simply deferring.

The best option is the one that gives you enough time to start your studies properly without putting your admission or visa at risk.
