When you call AV, you’re speaking directly to us — Andrew or Sarah — not a call centre or a third-party operator.

We’re here to answer your questions, talk through your options and help you find the right programme for you.

Already decided to join us? Andrew or Sarah will get to know you personally and guide you through every step of your AV journey.

AV was founded in 1993, and between us, we have 38 years of gap year knowledge and experience. So whether you have a big question, a small question or a “this might be a really silly question…” question — ask away! 😄

🇺🇬 Your Uganda adventure starts 4 February 2027.

Imagine arriving in Uganda with a group of people you've never met — and leaving with friendships, stories and experiences you'll carry for years.

Over 5–12 weeks, you'll immerse yourself in local community life, support rural schools in the Jinja area, and experience Uganda alongside your fellow AVs.

As an AV, you'll have the chance to:

⭐️ Become part of a rural community
⭐️ Build resilience, confidence & independence
⭐️ Develop communication & teamwork skills
⭐️ Experience a completely different culture
⭐️ Create lasting memories from a gap year that makes a difference

On our programmes, you can get involved with local football teams, organise inter-school tournaments, run sports days — or even create something completely new, alongside running PE & Games sessions.

The total cost depends on where you go, how long you travel for, what’s included in your programme and how much independent travel you do.

It might not be the most exciting part of planning your gap year… but it could be one of the most important.

We’ve teamed up with Travel Aware to put together a guide to getting your travel insurance right before you head off. 🌍

Here are 6 things to check:

✔️ Declare any pre-existing medical conditions
✔️ Make sure you're covered for the full length of your trip
✔️ Check that your planned activities are covered
✔️ Look for medical evacuation & repatriation cover
✔️ Keep your policy details and emergency contacts accessible
✔️ Share your policy details with someone at home

One of our past AVs summed up their experience in those two words — and we think they capture what an immersive gap year should really be about.

“I loved that we were able to live within a village and become part of a community… something that has always been important to me when learning about other cultures and countries.”

It wasn’t just about volunteering. It was about living alongside a community, experiencing a different culture from the inside, and having the freedom to make the experience their own.

And the learning went far beyond the project:
