Villa Sterna is a beautiful newly built property in Corfu, boasting glorious views across the sea and towards Albania. Inside, the house is cool and airy, with minimalist furnishing and fresh, whitewashed walls. In the main house, you can enjoy a spacious open-plan kitchen, living and dining space, as well as a double bedroom paired with an en suite bedroom. Do you know when your passport was issued? For EU trips, that date is just as important as the expiry.

In recent weeks I have seen travellers caught out at the airport because of the 10‑year passport rule. Most people only look at the expiry date, but for trips to the EU and Schengen area, the issue date is just as important.

Here is why:
Before September 2018, UK passports could be issued with up to 9 extra months carried over from the old passport. This means some passports appear to be valid for more than 10 years. While that used to be widely accepted, EU and Schengen countries now apply strict rules on passport validity. You will be denied travel.

If you are travelling to the EU/Schengen area, your passport must meet both of these conditions:

Issue date:
Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the EU country.

Expiry date:
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the EU country.

I always check passport validity for my own clients as part of their holiday planning, but it is so important that you double‑check your passport dates well in advance of any trip.
