Grassington 1940s Weekend - few photos from yesterday.

Jo and I dropped in yesterday to have a little look at this festival. It’s brilliant (very busy / well supported) the town gets into it fully….1940’s music / singers / dancing, vehicle displays from the period, and a significant proportion of visitors dress up in period clothes / uniforms.

The majestic Hardraw Force Waterfall in , Yorkshire Dales National Park today.

There’s lots of reasons to book a stay at Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage, but the opportunity to visit Hardrow Force (as it’s spelt locally) is very definitely right at the top of the list.

We’re just under two miles very pleasant valley bottom walk on the Pennine Way National Trail away from Hardraw, the waterfall and the 800 year old Green Dragon at Hardraw.

Hawes -

🏃 🏃‍♀️ 🚴🏻🚴🏻‍♀️🧗‍♂️🧗🏊🏊‍♀️ 🥾 🥾
Well it’s national fitness day, and a little note of recognition to all those who visit Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage to get outdoors into some of the most beautiful scenery in the world in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

We attract walkers (serious and casual), runners, cyclists, wild swimmers…you name it. Many of you just want a nice circular walk to a pub or coffee shop and we’ve so many circular and linear routes straight from the cottage for you!

🪧 Our area is cross crossed by footpaths and walking paths. The Pennine Way National Trail, Herriot’s Way, Coast To Coast Path (in Swaledale), Lady Ann Way, Yoredale Way. We’ve also the Hawes Mosaic Walk Trail, and a family treasure trail around Hawes and Gayle. And we’re a great base for the Yorkshire Three Peaks too.

🏃‍♂️ The Montane Spine Race (the toughest running race in the UK comes through Hawes in both Summer and Winter).

Wild swimmers love Semerwater and Cauldron Falls at West Burton to name a few spots.

And cyclists. You’re in a road bike mecca. Climb the Cote De Buttertubs pass made famous as the signature climb when The Tour De France came through Hawes. MTB and gravel bikers, the area is awash with trails for you too. Family cyclists love the Swale Trail as a predominantly traffic free stunning cycle route. We have a secure bike store annex too at the cottage.

So we celebrate you all choosing Hawes as a base for fabulous active adventures.

🍺 🥘 As for us; we get out and explore the area all the time. How can we recommend walks or runs or swims if we haven’t tried them ourselves? This is in part why I’m entered in the 6 day 74 mile The Inn Way through the Yorkshire Dales walk next April with TeamWalking - Hill Skills & Outdoor Adventures, with Mark Reid FRGS. Only by using our own legs can we make recommendations to you, and of course I visit a lot of our finest hostelries on the route purely for research purposes….

Well if you’ve been to see Richard Fawcett’s working sheepdog demonstration you will know he takes great care to explain the importance of sheep farming to Hawes, Wensleydale and the whole of the dales.

Some of you may have popped in to Hawes Farmers Auction Mart to see the weekly sheep sales?

Well today and tomorrow is the business end of the farming year. The sale of this years fully grown lambs…it’s the time when the farmers cash much of their ‘crop’ in and a very very important part of the year.

Hawes will be busy, The White Hart and all the other pubs will be busy. It’s a business occassion with a social side.

Hope the farmers do well this week, they are the backbone of the area.
