What a difference a day makes! Yesterday we struggled to find birds, today we were tripping over Glossy Ibis and Dotterel! Nine Glossy Ibis were together at Hayle with another five in nearby Carnsew Pool! Later this evening I found two more at St Gothian Sands and others (or some of the same) were reported at Sennen, Truro, Trewey Common, Zennor and Polgigga! After a few days of not being reported, we caught up with the four Dotterels at Trevilley. With a bit of patience the birds approached quite close and settled for a while before moving back down the field away from the path. Let's hope some of these birds hang around for our private tour tomorrow!

Bit of a tough day on our first Early Autumn Tour yesterday. Morning was great with 14 types of waders on the Hayle and Copperhouse Creek, two fantastic Peregrines chasing the waders and two obliging Kingfishers! Many of the waders on the estuary appeared to have moved on and the strong SW wind didnt help either! The seabirds off Godrevy Head didnt seem to mind tho with thousands of Manx Shearwaters and Gannets flying by. A Whitethroat put in a very breif appearance here and a Wheatear was on the headland. Unfortunatley we were already at Kenidjack Valley when the news broke of numerous good birds at Drift reservoir like Pectoral, Wood and Green Sandpipers and a Black Kite! We had a lovely walk down the valley with stunning blue skies and beautiful scenery but almost zero birds of note! A very obliging Grey Heron looked very out of place sat in a Hawthorn Bush in a field! We didnt even see any Choughs sadly! We ended the day on 61 species of bird. Wonderful company as always!

HQ is turning into a bit of a Bio-blitz this last few weeks! We had a MOTUS ariel fitted to help with satellite tracking of birds, running two Moth traps every night and keeping an eye on daytime and nightime migration. Noc-migging, as its called, using an old lamp shade as a parabolic reflector! Last night we recorded Dunlin, Oystercatcher, Ringed Plover, Common Sandpiper and our resident Tawny Owl! First thing this morning whilst opening the moth traps, a Tree Pipit landed in the sycamore then across the field again, before heading north. The Sparrowhawks that bred nearby have been around all day but otherwise its been quiet overhead today with just Kestrel, Ravens and a Med Gull of note.
Moth numbers have started to drop off now with Autumn on the way but we are still getting migrants. This morning they included Scarce Bordered Straw, Small Mottled Willow, Rusty Dot Pearl and Olive-tree Moth.
Just goes to show, you dont have to wander far from your back garden to enjoy Wildlife!
