Patch management software is vital to your layered security strategy as it simplifies updating your systems.

This blog on patch management follows my series of Cyber Awareness Month-themed polls on LinkedIn, highlighting the need to protect your networks.
NCSC statistics showed that 70% of cybersecurity incidents targeted SMEs/SMBs during the past year, while 90% of cybersecurity incidents can be avoided by following NCSC guidelines.
UK Gov figures also show that 60% of these incidents could have been avoided if the systems had been securely patched

In this series of blogs I intend to provide an overview of the layers of security that create a cohesive Cybersecurity strategy suitable for most businesses.

Patch management software is a vital component of your layered security strategy as it simplifies keeping your systems updated.

I was interested to see how other countries are dealing with Online Safety, the Chinese approach will get many parents vote.

We have been writing extensively about the UK Online Safety Act, but I was interested to see how other countries deal with the same issues. I have left the referring site links intact for anyone who fancies a trip down a rabbit hole today. I had Copilot research for me and found an excellent piece ....

Will the online safety bill make the Internet a safer place for all of us and provide additional protection for our children online. Read the Tamite blog for our view

The Online Safety Act (OSA) was passed in October 2023 as a bill aims to make the Internet safe for all of us, especially our children.

Social algorithms must change to protect children – Ofcom – BBC

When they are trawling for content, young people (actually, not just young people) lack a sense of “why this stuff” is being served up to them.
This is a problem I honestly can’t relate to, as the Internet wasn’t a thing when I was a kid, and CBBC and Teletext were hardly challenging technology environments.

So I’m very much pro-regulation of the Internet, especially where children are concerned; even the “Wild West” finally got regulation, but not before a lot of people ended up shot.

For more on how we can take positive actions to protect children on the web and Social media see our latest blog ...https://tamite.co.uk/what-is-the-online-safety-act-and-how-can-you-keep-children-safe-online/

Making sure your children are safe online can't be left to regulation; children hopefully receive online safety training at schools. But...

This week, I had the opportunity to see firsthand just how frustrating it is to deal with an account hijack.
The customer contacted me, as one of the retired partners had unfortunately been victim to a hijacked personal email account.

The hijacking was discovered when spam was sent from the compromised account, some of which was directed toward the retired partner’s old company.

It wasn't difficult to work out how the account had been compromised the passwords were too simple and anyway we shouldn't just rely on passwords to protect our data.

Stolen passwords are the most common cause of account compromise. Compromised accounts are often used in phishing campaigns and to send spam.

how good is my password, in most cases not good enough. Account hijacking is on the rise and can cause you and your business serious issues.

I believe the next few years in IT will be incredibly exciting as AI will be truly transformative for many of the tools we currently use to run our businesses.

The best advice for anyone looking to succeed and progress, whether in your personal career or business, is to look at how artificial intelligence will affect what and how you go about your activities, understand it, and embrace it.
As technology develops, the danger to jobs and companies will come from the fact that people who resist and don’t learn to work with AI won’t be as efficient as their colleagues who have. Companies that don’t embrace artificial intelligence won’t be as competitive as those that understand how to use AI, train their employees in how to use it, and plan to fully embrace a future where AI will assist in most facets of the business.
Having an AI colleague and assistant will greatly benefit many of us who currently feel we are struggling with information overload.

Hovhannes Avoyan, founder of picture and video editing app Picsart, shares his advice for our CEO Secrets series.

One of the problems that Social Media providers will have as the use of AI for producing content becomes more prevalent is the question of trust. If the platforms are unable to distinguish between and alert us to content created by AI, they will have significant issues of credibility; legitimate users who aren't trying to dupe us should have no problems with admitting the contribution AI has made, such as co-authoring and the makers of the tools will need to add watermarks.
We can look forward to our existing tools being updated to detect AI content and new entrants to the market aimed at detecting the illicit content produced to mislead us. In the meantime, it's a good idea for all of us to keep abreast of developments in AI, good and bad, as it will happen anyway.

The tech will detect images - but not video or audio - made by other companies' AI generators.

I love this BBC article. One of the most exciting aspects of AI will be when assistants can go beyond fetching and carrying data and actually respond emotionally.
I'm sure most of us have seen the incredible work organisations like Age UK do for our community.
In many cases, older people in this country are lonely. I visit an older friend a couple of times a week and phone when I can, but when we visit them, it just brings home the fact that a couple of fleeting conversations don’t even begin to cover it.. of course, if they are mobile, they can go to a regular coffee morning. But what many isolated people crave is a companion.
An AI companion who acts with empathy engages in conversations and acts as a trusted friend could benefit many people in our community.

Artificial intelligence will revolutionise our work and leisure, so we must embrace it now. However, the hype currently outweighs the achievements, but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a fad.
In five years, it will be like the Internet; we will all wonder how we managed before it arrived.

One of the possibilities offered by integrating AI into our businesses is the ability to create high-quality and compelling proposals, blogs, and presentations quickly and accurately.
We are already experiencing high levels of interest from my customers; they see that in a challenging economic environment, their businesses need to improve their interactions with clients, and they perceive the advantages that AI products like Chatbots and Microsoft Copilot can bring.
Essentially, AI assistants have possibilities beyond creating proposals. They can assist with creating financial analyses, researching new products, and assessing competitors.
We will face many issues with AI’s ability to imitate and fake; legislation can help, and legitimate tools used to create images and video content can be put in tags and digitally watermarked so that we know what we see is digitally enhanced or created.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-68215619
New tools will need to be developed and existing ones augmented to be able to spot this kind of deceptions, and we are probably already seeing them in Phishing emails; AI defences are already being added to security products such as web and email filtering and will help here as well.
Take a look at our latest blog to see how we are helping our customers benefit from AI.

There is a widespread conception that AI will be bad news for many job functions; like me, the Bank of England Governor doesn't hold this view. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-68170068
Technology within our businesses, the Internet, Email, social media, even Microsoft Teams and the incredible amount of data created by our applications have resulted in many users suffering from information overload. The reason is apparent: we humans are not built to deal with multiple simultaneous lines of communication, and we very quickly fall into a state of information fatigue.
The computer as a mass processing tool used for work and pleasure would not have taken off if we had all had to learn code to work it; the addition of the Windows Graphical interface, which allowed us to use a mouse to select an application, made computing usable to almost anyone.
Artificial Intelligence and products like Microsoft Copilot are the next logical step; they are an interface between computing and the Internet, and they will help us filter out the noise and work much more effectively; the biggest risk is that they may bring some enjoyment and creativity back into the working day. See how we are helping our customers use AI to work more effectively and give their customers a better service. https://tamitesecureit.com/how-to-use-microsoft-365-copilot-to-automate-email-responses/

I firmly believe businesses can benefit from their technological investments by adopting AI, specifically Microsoft Copilot.
According to Bill Gates, businesses that embrace AI will succeed in the future, and that doesn't just apply to big businesses. If anything, I believe smaller, more agile companies will benefit even more than larger ones. This is because bigger firms have bigger workforces and more complex infrastructures with more built-in inertia.
SMEs are ideally placed to leverage the extra productivity and time efficiencies, freeing employees from routine and repetitive work and giving them time for creativity.
Which is what computer technology and AI should be all about.
Employees and employers need not be concerned about the changes AI will bring to the workplace, as having a personal assistant on every desktop will enhance productivity and improve security by reducing digital overload.
