✨Ten Minutes Apart: Chepstow Castle and Tintern Abbey. ✨

Cross the Severn Bridge and the road signs switch to Welsh. It’s the first sign you have arrived somewhere with its own Celtic history.

Two of the best stops in the Wye Valley sit ten minutes from each other. One was built to hold ground. One was built for worship.

Chepstow Castle was built after the Norman invasion, on a rock above the fast tidal Wye. The river did half the defending. Its great tower is 120 feet long, blank on the landward side and full of tall gothic windows facing the water.

The doors are the thing people remember. Tree-ring dating puts them in the 1190s, making them the oldest castle doors in Europe. Iron plated so they could not be burned or battered through.

📸 Cross the river afterwards. There are several spots on the far bank where the castle photographs beautifully📸.

Tintern Abbey is a short drive upstream. Cistercian monks founded it in the early 12th century because they wanted distance from the cathedral cities, and the valley gave them that. What they eventually built is one of the masterpieces of British Gothic architecture🏛️.

Turner came here twice and painted the ruins wrapped in ivy. Those paintings are what turned a roofless church into somewhere people travelled to see.
The White Monk tea rooms do a good Welsh rarebit if you want lunch before moving on.

🗺️ Heathrow to Chepstow is under two hours, with Bath and the Cotswolds on the way if you would rather break the journey. Stay in the valley a little longer and the Brecon Beacons, Cardiff and Carreg Cennen are all close by🚗.

Requiem for a Silhouette: The Final Sunset of the Sycamore Gap Tree.

I am heartbroken to share one of the very last photographs ever taken of the FAMOUS iconic Sycamore Gap tree along Hadrian’s Wall - the tree become a Hollywood star in the film: "Robinhood Prince of Thieves", starring Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman.

Weeks before this legendary Northumberland landmark was senselessly and illegally felled in a midnight act of vandalism. I was working out short interesting walks along Hadrian's Wall and took this shots of the legendary tree.

For decades, this perfectly framed sycamore bridged the gap between raw British nature and centuries of history, serving as an essential pilgrimage for travellers seeking the true soul of the Northern England's landscape. While the two individuals responsible have since been jailed for criminal damage, the scar left on this UNESCO World Heritage Site remains profound. Yet, even in tragedy, nature is fighting back; small, vibrant new shoots have recently begun emerging from the original stump, safely protected in the hope of future rebirth.

The horizon of Northumberland has changed forever, but the legacy of this majestic tree endures in the quiet, final frames captured on that fateful evening.

Last week, Andrew and I visited Canterbury to test new experiences for future itineraries.

🛶 We started punting down the River Stour with a proper English punter, who shared how Canterbury's history unfolded, from St Augustine's arrival in 597 AD to the old Kingdom of Kent.

📖 Next was the Canterbury Tales experience, based on Chaucer's work, builders, cobblers, and landowners all equal on the pilgrimage. It's lively and slightly silly, perfect for families after something relaxed.

🍟 After fish and chips, we visited Canterbury Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 525 feet long, with a 237-foot bell tower, and the Bell Harry Tower's fan vault, a masterpiece of English gothic architecture.

⛪ Inside, the tomb of the Black Prince sits near where Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in 1170, the event that made Canterbury a pilgrimage site for centuries.

It's a fantastic stop for religious followers, or anyone exploring England's best-preserved medieval cities, and pairs well with a day trip to Leeds Castle, Dover Castle, or Sissinghurst Gardens.
