The Pre-School Holiday By Tom

With a child starting school in September, we knew time was ticking to enjoy one last getaway before becoming beholden to the stark reality of school-holiday pricing.

When considering the best destination for a family holiday with a three-year-old, we kept an open mind. One thing we did know was that we'd like to avoid the soporific haze of the traditional resort routine: buffet, lounger, pool, buffet, repeat.

A conversation with my colleague Alan led to the suggestion of trying the Alps in summer. That, in turn, brought us to Nesslerhof in Grossarl, Austria.

Owned by the Neudegger family, the hotel positions itself as a family-friendly, five-star wellness destination with gourmet dining, all set against the backdrop of year-round Alpine adventures. From the photos, the hotel looked substantial, and I wondered whether that warm, family welcome would survive at such a scale—especially when arriving with an ahem active three-year-old boy in tow.

We set off for London Stansted with a short flight to Salzburg ahead, accompanied by the usual trepidation that comes with any significant journey involving a young child. We navigated a busy terminal without incident, boarded the plane, collected our rental car on arrival, and headed south for the hour-long drive to Grossarl.

From door to door, the journey was remarkably straightforward, helped enormously by the convenient flight times (thanks again, Alan). We arrived at the hotel far less frazzled than you might expect after a first flight with a three-year-old.

Before I go any further, I'd like to make one thing absolutely clear: we paid for this holiday ourselves. We travelled as an ordinary family, not as part of any promotional activity or press trip. It's an important point because, from here on, writing this blog becomes surprisingly difficult.

You see, I've worked in travel marketing for the best part of two decades. During that time, I've seen roughly 27 billion hotel and tour operator websites, brochures, reels, promotional videos, editorial features, advertorials... you name it.

I'm also fortunate enough to have travelled extensively.

Now, I'm not saying I've become a jaded, cynical man in his mid-forties, completely snow-blind to slow-motion drone shots of infinity pools soundtracked exclusively by ambient synths or an acoustic ukulele.

But I'm also not saying that.

With all that in mind, I can honestly say that everything Nesslerhof promises is true. Every word of it.

I don't think I've ever encountered that before.

We all go on holiday with an unspoken understanding that it won't look exactly like the pictures, or my meal won't really look like that.

As a travel advisor, I've been fortunate to experience many beautiful destinations, but Zanzibar left a lasting impression. From the moment we arrived—greeted by a refreshing tropical shower at the airport—I knew this trip would be something special.

Our journey began in the historic streets of Stone Town, where every carved doorway and winding alley tells a story. We visited Prison Island to meet giant tortoises, some over 200 years old, and joined a fascinating Spice Tour that brought the island's famous flavors and aromas to life. Evenings were spent wandering vibrant food markets, enjoying delicious local dishes, and dancing to the sounds of live bands filled with energy and character.

Next came the peaceful pace of Zanzibar's east coast. At Diamonds Mapenzi Beach Hotel, we settled into days of poolside relaxation, incredible food, unlimited cocktails, and warm hospitality. The tranquil beach and welcoming atmosphere made it the perfect escape for couples, families, and friends alike.

Our adventures didn't stop there. Safari Blue treated us to spectacular snorkeling, crystal-clear waters, and a memorable seafood lunch on a pristine sandbank. We also explored the lively beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa before ending our trip with a magical sunrise excursion to Mnemba Island, where we spotted dolphins and enjoyed some of the most breathtaking waters I've ever seen.

Would I go back? Absolutely—in a heartbeat.

Behind the Scenes in Saas Fee

There’s a little village high in the Swiss Alps that first experienced stardom way back in 1984 when Wham! filmed the, now famous, video to ‘Last Christmas’ here. This was not the intended destination for the film crew but a lack of snow led to Saas-Fee being chosen. Today it’s a place that exists mid-way between reality and imagination, surrounded by snow-covered peaks that remain delightfully car free.
