Many of my clients love cultivating a bag of bags. I come in and help them prune. Over the years I’ve built a healthy network of businesses, charities, schools & voluntary groups who are need and grateful for what I can send their way. is a prime example - they’re often on the look out for bags for their bottle shop so it’s good to send them to a good home, once I’ve weeded them out of a client’s home.

Another classic uncovered in a client’s slide collection - untouched for decades.
This is Jane.
But is Jane cute or pure evil?
The jury is out…

This week I’ve had the pleasure and privilege to start working with and her husband Brian, 60, who has been diagnosed with young onset Alzheimer’s dementia. As well as simplifying the house and supporting Keely to set up systems to enable Brian to keep his independence, I’m helping prepare the house for Loki - their new dog 🦮 with superpowers ❤️

Loki is Brian’s assistance dog . Loki is currently being trained by Hillside Paws for Life to help Brian & his family.

Loki will provide reassurance during moments of confusion & anxiety with deep pressure therapy (laying on legs), getting help from family members, encourage Brian to ‘anchor’ and stay in place by leaning.

Loki will help Brian get to regular games with Bradford City Walking Football, who through their friendliness, understanding and humour have been a huge source of positivity for Brian.

Loki will also help with shopping, picking Brian’s grandson up from school, give him the confidence to be more independent as well as adding a purpose and routine to his day.

There is no provision for dementia assistance dogs in England so Keely has been fundraising with friends & family (see below).

Throughout this journey Dementia Pathways, who work with people and the families of people with working age dementia, have been an invaluable source of support.

Keely is warm, smart and strong and I am so chuffed she’s invited me into her home to help & I’m looking forward to meeting Loki 🦮

I do try to practise what I preach - here’s a case in hand… So when clients have jewellery festering in drawers I encourage them to sell it, or invest in getting it reset into pieces they’ll actually wear. After recently separating from my ex, the rings were off. But rather than shutting my past away I’ve chosen to celebrate how far I’ve come so had my wedding and engagement rings remade into a divorce ring by
I mean, it would also be silly to let some decent diamonds so to waste.
So yes - it’s a thing - and obviously worn on this finger 🖕🏼

I was also inspired by a friend who after her husband’s death combined both their wedding rings into a heart shaped pendant ❤️

Some things are an immediate keep. A perfect example popped up today. My client’s mum was a teacher so made these gems, which are a classic segment of social history too.

Why I love my job #457
I have the privilege of working with some amazing people. I learn how they live - and how they want to live. I also get to appreciate some of their talents.
One such client showed me this weather blanket which she’d just finished. She made a patch a day for a whole year. The centre colour is the lowest temperature, the outer colour the highest that day, then the snowflake represents the rainfall.
It helped her represent the passing of the year, without her late husband.
It shows how the seasons, and her life, carried on.

Something about old pencils always gets me when I discover them at work. Maybe they hark back to when we didn’t live in a throw away society. They’ve been kept and used to the max, and chewed. The gnawed one reminds me of exams & daydreaming whilst staring vacantly out of windows.

I love the stories behind the objects my client’s treasure. Today it was this teddy. “My mum made this bear for me when she was in hospital for several months. I was only four years-old. Sometimes we drove to visit and sometimes we went on the train. It was at the time of the Suez Crisis and people were allowed to drive without passing their test. On one of our trips to Harrogate my Dad got caught going up a one way street and at that point he didn’t know how to reverse.”
