Monnow River Cottage

Monnow River Cottage Romantic water-side retreat for two in the Black mountains. Luxury cottage set in beautiful gardens and protected wildflower meadows. A place to sit and relax.

Linen bedding, fluffy white towels, welcome hamper. Relax in front of a wood burning fire. The cottage is a converted bakehouse which was used to make bread for the village well into the 20th century. It sits next to The Mill House in a peaceful garden setting and overlooks the mill building. Inside, you’ll be welcomed with a hamper full of local produce and a choice of wine or Prosecco. The flags

tone entrance hall has room for boots and coats. Off the hallway are the kitchen and bathroom which are built on the site of the original bread ovens. The kitchen, which overlooks a private patio, is equipped with a halogen ceramic hob, electric oven, Belfast sink, microwave and fridge/freezer. The bathroom has WC, wash-basin, shower and washing machine. The large beamed living room overlooks the beautiful cottage gardens of lawns and herbaceous borders. Enjoy a afternoon drink or lunch on the lawns. Inside the cottage settle down on the comfortable sofa in front of the log burning stove and a TV/DVD player. A selection of books and DVD’s and board games offer alternative entertainment if you decide to stay in. Off the sitting room and overlooking the kitchen garden and old orchard is a large, bright sunroom with more comfortable seating and another dining table. French doors from the sunroom lead onto a sunny patio, perfect for breakfast or a coffee with papers bought from the award-winning local village shop, Hopes. Or an ideal place to simply relax, watching the energetic garden birds at their feeders. Upstairs is a spacious oak beamed double aspect bedroom. There is an ensuite toilet with an airing cupboard. In the bedroom further cupboards allow plenty of storage. A Perfect Setting
Alongside the ancient 18ft mill wheel is a lovely private garden for you to enjoy. A sloping lawn leads to a paved area enclosed by a high stone wall and the waterwheel. It has a table, benches and a chiminea barbecue. The view is towards the river, fields and the Black Mountains in the distance. You can also enjoy our protected wild flower meadows for picnics by the river, spotting a kingfisher or fishing for wild brown trout - a fishing licence can be bought from Longtown Post Office. This is a perfect place to relax in the evening over a glass of wine. Alternatively, a 15min walk to the Cornewall Arms. A traditional heritage pub which offers a selection of real ales. Catch up with the friendly locals even joinin with a game of cards or quoits.

Hosts are just fabulous and so kind and thoughtful. Cottage immaculate and full of beautiful garden flowers - every little detail was perfect. Brilliantly equipped. Gardens and surrounding fields are wonderful - we were so happy in the garden we only took one outing!

A really lovely cottage with everything you need for a wonderful stay. Totally relaxing, beautiful garden and grounds with the River Monnow gently flowing by. Tivy and Steve are such a lovely couple and thought of everything to make my stay so memorable and I can’t thank them enough.

Our fourth stay at MRC. Garden as pretty as ever, as are the flower meadows. Quality bed linen is lovely to sink into after a day walking the hills. Our one rainy day was a blessing in disguise, as it gave us an excuse to sit in the sun-room and read, free from any guilt that we weren't out walking....

A perfect country retreat to unwind, relax and have a game of croquet with Tivy and Steve. This was our fourth visit and hope to return again next year.

We had a lovely stay. The cottage is well-equipped and has excellent decor. The large garden, orchard and river area are lovely to walk around. Good to have a village shop and pub only a few minutes walk away. Had some enjoyable games of croquet with the friendly owners!

Just a few photos from our hay making this year.
It’s all about looking after our protected wild flower meadows. The UK has lost around 97% of its wildflower meadows over the past 100 years. So we feel quite passionate about protecting our beautiful fields.

Good to see that after the hay’s been taken the meadow is still supporting wildlife

Highly recommend a day at Hay on Wye. Not just famous for its bookshops, it has a charming market every Thursday morning. Street food, flea market and a farmers market with local produce, definitely worth planning a visit while staying at Monnow River cottage.

This is my favourite time of year. Glorious apple blossom in the orchard. The place is alive with bees and Hoverflies. Spring flowers so delicate and charming. Beautiful.
