E 10 Petrol and your Machine.

By now most of us will have heard of the changeover from E5 petrol to E10. The standard fuel now being sold at all petrol stations.
Please note that the more expensive option of super unleaded is still available but at a premium price.
There has been much debate about the new fuel as it has been said that many cars and machines will not run on it.
They All will run on it and unlike when the old 4 star was replaced with unleaded. No work is required on your engine before you use it.
Your 3.5 classic will still cut grass and your mantis will still rapidly decapitate worms.
You will still mix your 2 stroke exactly the same way as before.
The problems begin with the long term usage and over winter storage of your machine.
Ethanol (the E in E10) loves to eat rubber and plastic over a period of time.
Don't panic. You will not find a heap of digested plastic on the floor but fuel tanks and lines will deteriorate and the resulting residue is highly likely to gum up the jets in carburettors and in the case of a Briggs and Stratton. Destroy the internal diaphragm.
It will also perish the fuel lines on a 2 stroke engine.
While all of these are repairable with most parts readily available. The work is time consuming and can end up being expensive especially with a 2 stroke engine.
There are two very important things that you can do to help prevent this in all types of small engine.
1. Use a petrol stabiliser. These are relatively cheap, around £8.00 for 10 tubes with each tube treating 5ltrs of fuel.(Can be purchased in smaller amounts)
Simply add a tube to a can of E10 and use as normal.
2. Empty all machine fuel tanks before overwinter storage. A goodly sq**rt of WD40 into the carburettor will also help prolong the life of the components while they are not in use.
For further advice come and find me on my plot Jessops 27.

Please do not forget to feed our little feathered friends this time of year.
This is my mate Batman. No zoom lens and taken with a cheap unintelligent camera phone.
