Marokopa Falls, Waitomo 📍

Just a short drive from the Waitomo Caves, Marokopa Falls is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the North Island. It's only a quick walk from the carpark, about five minutes through lush forest, before the trees open up to a viewing platform looking straight at a 35-metre cascade.

The falls are wide, powerful, and especially dramatic after rain, with water pouring over a natural rock wall into the pool below. It's an easy stop to add to any Waitomo trip, and the short walk makes it suitable for all ages.

If you're exploring the area, pair it with Mangapohue Natural Bridge and the Piripiri Caves for a great little loop of local highlights.

“I knew it would be special, but I never expected to be blown away like I was.”

When Jen from Freedom Destinations heard about Wintjiri Wiru, a nighttime drone show at Uluru, she knew she had to add it to her Northern Territory itinerary.

“We watched Uluru as the sun set, and from the moment the speakers came on, our whole group was transfixed. Although the drones were spectacular, the music and Anangu narration were equally enchanting, and the combination made for the most memorable evening.”

Nearby there is more illuminated magic at the Field of Light, an installation of more than 50,000 solar-powered stems that gently dance in the wind. Further afield, visitors can wander amongst 69 colour-changing light towers in Kings Canyon.

Iceberg Alley 🧊

Every spring and early summer, massive icebergs drift down from Greenland along Newfoundland & Labrador’s coastline - a stretch known as Iceberg Alley.

These towering white and blue sculptures float past fishing villages, lighthouses, and rugged cliffs, creating one of the most remarkable sights in the world.

You can watch them from the shore, join a boat tour to get closer, or even kayak alongside these frozen travellers from the north.

With whales and seabirds often nearby, it’s an ocean experience you’ll never forget.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania 📍

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of East Africa's most important wildlife areas. The Ngorongoro Crater, formed from a collapsed volcano, is home to around 25,000 large animals at any one time, including lions, elephants, buffalo and one of the highest concentrations of black rhino in Africa.

The wider conservation area covers more than 8,000 km² and is one of the few places where wildlife and the Maasai community continue to share the landscape. It also forms a key part of the annual migration route for wildebeest and zebra moving between Serengeti and the highlands.

With lakes, forests, open plains and volcanic peaks, Ngorongoro offers a mix of habitats in a relatively compact region, making it a standout destination for year-round wildlife viewing.

🌸 Cherry blossom season is coming! 🇯🇵

Each spring, Japan transforms as thousands of cherry trees burst into soft pink and white bloom. Streets, parks and temples become breathtaking backdrops as locals and visitors gather for hanami (cherry blossom viewing) beneath the blooms.

Whether strolling through Kyoto’s historic gardens, picnicking under the trees in Tokyo or seeing Mount Fuji framed by drifting petals, cherry blossom season is one of the most magical times to visit.

Yet this time of year is becoming increasingly crowded with tourists timing their visit to coincide with the flowering trees. Here are some of our favourite alternative flower festivals, with just as much magic on offer:

🌸 Mito Plum Blossom Festival – mid February to March
🌺 Fuji Shibazakura (pink moss phlox) Festival – mid April to late May
🌻 Hokuryu Sunflower Festival (Hokkaido) – July to August

Mount Aspiring National Park, New Zealand 📍

Mount Aspiring National Park is one of the South Island’s most remote and striking landscapes. Home to towering peaks, glacier-fed valleys, and some of the clearest rivers you’ll ever see, this park feels untouched in the best way.

Often called the ‘Matterhorn of the South’, Mount Aspiring (Tititea) stands tall at the centre of the park, surrounded by waterfalls, braided rivers, ancient beech forest, and glaciers flowing down from the Southern Alps. The scale of the place is impressive, with plenty of open space and very few crowds.

You don’t need to be a hardcore mountaineer to enjoy it either. Scenic drives, river walks, and shorter tracks around places like the Matukituki and Makarora Valleys make the park easy to explore, while longer hikes and alpine routes are there for those wanting more of a challenge.

📍 Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota

Where the prairies meet the Badlands, in western North Dakota, sits one of USA’s lesser-known, but best National Parks for wildlife spotting.

Named after the 26th US president, in recognition of his commitment to conserving America’s greatest landscapes, Theodore Roosevelt National Park is home to bison, prairie dogs, elk, mule deer, American badgers, wild horses and more!

The ever-impressive American bison and ever-curious black-tailed prairie dog are relatively easy to spot in both the park’s North and South Units, whilst elk and big horn sheep are more elusive.

The lookout points at Painted Canyon, Buck Hill or Wind Canyon in the South Unit offer the best chance to see wild horses, who tend to roam in groups of five to 15 animals.

The South Unit is easily accessed from the town of Medora. It has numerous hiking trails to follow, or a winding 48-mile scenic drive through Badlands terrain.

The North Unit is more remote, but equally worth exploring, both for the solitude, and for its unique geological features, such as the Cannonball Concretions, perfectly spherical boulders exposed by the erosion of surrounding rocks.

Would you land in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef? 🚁

The Whitsundays are a tropical paradise, and when it comes to experiencing them, there are lots of options to choose from...

🏖️ Whitehaven Beach
Step onto 7km of pure white silica sand and watch the swirling colours of Hill Inlet from above. It’s regularly voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and once you see it, you’ll understand why.

⛵ Sailing the Whitsundays
74 islands. Hidden coves. Snorkelling straight off the boat. Sunset drinks on deck. Pure island bliss.

🐠 Outer Great Barrier Reef Snorkelling
Swim alongside tropical fish, vibrant coral gardens and (if you’re lucky) turtles in crystal-clear waters. First-time snorkeller? No problem, it’s suitable for all levels.

🚁 Heart Reef – Journey to the Heart
Fly over the reef by helicopter, circle the iconic Heart Reef, then land at an exclusive reef pontoon. A true bucket-list moment and a favourite for honeymooners.

Which would you do first - snorkel, sail it or fly over it? 👇
