An evening on the Kafue River 🌅🐘

During her stay at Kaingu Safari Lodge in Zambia, Maritha, one of our Africa consultants, headed out for an evening boat cruise along the Kafue River.

Cruising through Kafue National Park as the day begins to cool is a great chance to spot wildlife along the riverbanks, from hippos and crocodiles to elephants and a wide variety of birdlife.

As the sun starts to set, the boat stops at a scenic spot to enjoy a drink and watch the colours change over the river, a brilliant way to finish a day on safari.

Devils Punchbowl Falls, Arthur's Pass National Park, New Zealand 📍

Devils Punchbowl Falls is one of the easiest waterfall stops in Arthur's Pass, but also one of the most impressive. The track starts just off the main road and takes around 1 hour return, with a steady climb and a lot of steps on the way up.

At the top, you're right opposite the falls, which drop around 130 meters down a steep rock face. After rain or snow melt, the flow is even stronger, and you'll often feel the spray from the viewing platform.

The walk itself goes through beech forest and opens up to views of the surrounding mountains as you climb. 🇳🇿

Mistaya Canyon in Banff, Alberta, is one of those stops people often drive straight past, but it's worth pulling over. 🛻

Just off the Icefields Parkway, it's a short walk from the car park down to the canyon. Once you're there, you've got fast-moving water cutting through narrow rock walls, with smooth curves shaped over time by the current.

It's not a long visit, but it's a good place to break up the drive and see something a bit different to the usual lake viewpoints. 🏞️

If you're heading between Banff and Jasper, it's an easy stop to add in without going out of your way.

Kerosene Creek, New Zealand 📍

Kerosene Creek is a natural hot stream just outside of Rotorua, and one of the more unknown geothermal spots in the area. Instead of pools or spa complexes, it's a warm river flowing through the bush, with a small waterfall you can sit under.

The water is naturally heated by geothermal activity, so temperatures vary depending on where you are in the stream, but it's generally warm enough for a dip year round.

It's free to visit and fairly basic, no changing facilities and limited parking, so it's more of a casual stop than a full spa experience. The short walk in takes you through native bush before opening up to the creek. 🌿

Known as ‘the show that made country music famous’, the Grand Ole Opry is a Nashville institution currently celebrating its 100th year.

Started initially as the WSM Barn Dance, the live radio broadcast morphed into a nationwide favourite by the 1940s, bringing country music to millions every Saturday.

By the 1950s and 60s, performing at the Grand Ole Opry had become a rite of passage for any up-and-coming country singer. Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton have all been members, and Elvis Presley performed there in 1954, albeit to mixed reviews due to his unconventional style.

Today the shows continue, with a live 2-hour TV broadcast going out most Saturday nights, and specials occasionally aired on the BBC in the UK. Each show is special, guaranteeing a mix of up-and-coming artists and famous country stars.
