Coober Pedy is famous for two things: opals and life underground 💎

Opal was first discovered here in 1915, and today Coober Pedy produces more than 70% of the world’s commercial supply, earning it the title “Opal Capital of the World”.

To escape the intense outback heat, early miners carved “dugouts” into the rock, where natural insulation kept temperatures comfortable. What began as a practical solution became a way of life. Today, over half the town’s residents live underground, with churches and shops hidden beneath too!

Visitors can experience it for themselves at the Desert Cave Hotel, sleeping in rooms carved into the sandstone, complete with an underground shopping arcade and bar.

A fittingly unique stay in one of Australia’s most unusual towns.

In the heart of the Flinders Ranges, Wilpena Pound is a natural amphitheatre of mountains covering roughly 8,000 hectares. Despite its crater-like appearance, it wasn’t formed by a meteor or volcano - millions of years of erosion shaped the landscape we see today.

Known as Ikara, meaning “meeting place” in the language of the Adnyamathanha people, the Pound has held deep cultural significance for thousands of years as a place for gathering, ceremony and the sharing of stories and knowledge.

Visitors can explore on walking trails, spot native wildlife including kangaroos and emus, climb to panoramic viewpoints, or take a scenic flight for the best sense of its impressive scale.

Ancient geology, aboriginal culture and classic Australian outback scenery all in one spectacular place.

Seppeltsfield, Barossa Valley 🍇

Here you'll find some of the oldest continuously producing grapevines on the planet. Many of the estate's heritage vines were planted in the 1850s, surviving droughts, changing climates and generations of w**emakers. Their deep roots and resilience produce small yields of intensely flavoured grapes, creating w**es that simply can't be replicated by younger vines.

Have you visited the Barossa Valley, or is it still on your travel wishlist? 🍷

📍Goldfields, Victoria

In the 1850s Victoria produced more than a third of the world's gold, placing it at the heart of one of history's greatest gold rushes.

The discovery attracted prospectors from more than 100 countries, including the British Isles, mainland Europe, the USA and China, transforming quiet settlements like Ballarat, Bendigo and Maldon into thriving multicultural communities almost overnight.

Today, that golden legacy lives on through beautifully preserved heritage streets, grand Victorian architecture, fascinating museums, acclaimed galleries and charming country towns.

Pan for gold, ride a vintage tram, or explore underground mines to immerse yourself in one of Australia's most remarkable chapters of history. ✨⛏️
