Margaret River 🍷

Tucked into the south-west corner of Western Australia, Margaret River has built a world-class w**e reputation in a remarkably short time, with its first commercial vines planted in the late 1960s!

A big part of the story is geography. With ocean on three sides, the vineyards experience a Mediterranean climate moderated by cooling sea breezes. Warm, dry summers allow the grapes to ripen steadily, while the region’s ancient, free-draining gravelly soils are especially well suited to growing premium fruit.

The result? Cabernet Sauvignon known for its elegance, fine tannins and dark-fruit character; Chardonnay with freshness, intensity and often a distinctive citrus edge. Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are important here too, frequently appearing together in the region’s crisp, aromatic white blends.

There’s more to Noosa than its famous beaches… 🌲

Head into the Great Sandy National Park and you’ll find one of only two everglades systems on Earth - the Noosa Everglades, a network of waterways surrounded by tea tree forests, wetlands and native bushland.

The best way to explore is undoubtedly by boat. Join a nature cruise or hire a kayak to glide along the dark, tannin-stained waters, known as the ‘River of Mirrors’ due to the amazing reflections.

The area is also rich in birdlife, with pelicans, cormorants, eagles and kingfishers just a few of the species found here.

📍 Albany, Western Australia

🎖️ A remarkable history
Albany was the site of Western Australia’s first European settlement in 1826 and later became closely connected with the ANZAC story. In 1914, the first convoys carrying Australian and New Zealand troops to the First World War gathered in King George Sound before sailing overseas. Today, the National Anzac Centre tells their stories from a hilltop overlooking the harbour.

🌊 Along the coast
Head into Torndirrup National Park, where the Southern Ocean has shaped the granite coastline over millions of years. Stand above the crashing water at The Gap, see the naturally formed Natural Bridge, then continue along a coast of cliffs, headlands and secluded beaches.

🏖️ Closer to town
Middleton Beach offers a much calmer side of Albany, with a long stretch of sand and views across King George Sound. Between June and October, the surrounding waters are also visited by migrating southern right and humpback whales!

Penguin Parade! 🐧

As the sun sets on Phillip Island, one of Australia’s most popular wildlife experiences begins.

The Penguin Parade sees hundreds of little penguins return from a day of fishing in the ocean, waddling across Summerland Beach to their burrows. Watching them make their way ashore is a memorable sight, with viewing platforms and boardwalks available to give you the chance to see them up close without disturbing their natural behaviour.

While you’re on Phillip Island, you can also visit the Koala Conservation Reserve, spot seals at The Nobbies, or explore the island’s beautiful coastline.

📍Burleigh Heads, Gold Coast

With its beautiful coastline and relaxed local atmosphere, Burleigh Heads is an easy place to spend the day.

Start on Burleigh Beach, popular for swimming, surfing and long walks along the sand, before heading up into Burleigh Head National Park. Here, walking trails wind through rainforest and around the headland, with viewpoints looking across the Pacific and north towards the Gold Coast skyline.

Back in town, the streets around Burleigh are packed with independent cafés, restaurants and casual bars, perfect for a slow breakfast, post-beach coffee or sunset drink 🍹

📍The Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, Victoria

One of Australia’s best-loved National Parks, the Grampians (Gariwerd) is a place of dramatic mountain scenery, unique wildlife and important cultural significance.

The park has an extensive network of walking trails, leading to lookouts like The Pinnacle, with its panoramic views over Western Victoria, and tumbling cascades like the 35-metre-high Mackenzie Falls.

It’s also home to one of Australia’s largest collections of Aboriginal rock art, sharing the stories of the traditional owners of the land; like that of Bunjil, the spiritual creator of Gariwerd, and his two assistant dingoes.

Just driving through the Grampians offers a great chance to see native wildlife, with kangaroos, emus, wallabies, kookaburras and cockatoos often hanging out along the scenic route between Ararat and Halls Gap.

All this just three hours from Melbourne! The Grampians are truly an essential part of any Victoria itinerary.

Fancy adding a little adrenaline to your Queensland holiday? 🌊

Around two hours south of Cairns, the Tully River is one of Australia’s best-known white water rafting destinations, running through the tropical scenery of Tully Gorge National Park.

A rafting trip here takes you through a series of Grade 3 and 4 rapids, with experienced guides helping you navigate the twists, drops and fast-moving sections of the river. Between the rapids, there’s time to take in the surrounding Wet Tropics rainforest from a completely different perspective. And keep an eye out for water dragons!

The river has earned an international reputation too, having hosted the 2019 World Rafting Championships.

South Australia’s lakes!😲

📍Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre: Australia’s largest salt lake and the continent’s lowest point, 15.2 metres below sea level. Floodwaters can transform it into a huge temporary wetland, though a complete fill only happens a few times a century.

📍Lake Hart: Brilliant white salt flats, occasional hints of pink and the deep red earth of the Outback. Once commercially mined for salt, it’s now a striking stop on an Outback journey, or a memorable view from the Indian Pacific.

📍Lake MacDonnell: Home to ‘Watermelon Avenue’ on the Eyre Peninsula, where a narrow road famously divides bubblegum-pink water from contrasting blue-green.

📍Blue Lake/ Warwar: A volcanic crater lake in Mount Gambier, known for turning an intense cobalt blue during the warmer months and serving as the drinking water supply for the city.

📍Lake Bumbunga: An ever-changing salt lake, shifting between pink, white and blue with salinity, algae and weather. Catching it at its brightest pink is never guaranteed, which makes it all the more impressive when you do.
