The White Lion has live music and a deal on Fish & Chips on Friday.

The Hertfordshire Festival of Music has its final events of this year’s Festival in Hertford this weekend. On Friday evening at 7.30pm a New Virtuosi!: A Meeting of Friends takes place at the Friends Meeting House. The programme reflects friendship as a creative force: Britten and Poulenc wrote their sonatas at a similar moment for performers who were themselves close friends. Music has a rare ability to draw people together — and there could be no more fitting place to hear it than the Friends’ Meeting House. Tickets can be purchased in advance or on the door.

There’s live music from Louise Harper at the Practitioner this evening.

If you fancy a run to start your weekend, Panshanger parkrun takes place at 9am on Saturday. If anyone is local to Panshanger park who would be interested in being a guide for a person with a visual impairment on a Saturday morning, do get in touch with the organisers.

It's market day in Hertford. Taking place in Salisbury Square, Maidenhead Street, Railway Street and Bircherley Green, regular stalls include fruit & veg, fish, plants & flowers, ladies’ fashion, eggs, meat, bread, pastries and more.

Indigo Forest School's Stay & Play: The Life of Trees takes place on Saturday from 10am. They'll be stepping into the secret life of trees, exploring how they capture energy from the sun, connect through vast underground networks, and support life all around them. Expect woodland adventures, hands-on science, nature crafts, grounding practices, campfire connection and plenty of time for free play amongst the trees.

All cooks, bakers, growers, foragers and brewers are invited to join Hertford Food Swap at BEAM on Saturday. Arrive at 10.30am and swap anything home grown, brewed, cooked or preserved for other produce.

Hertford St Andrew's Church’s June Coffee Morning & Plant Sale is raising funds for Cancer Research in memory of the late Julia Spring, one of the Church’s Women on Wednesday Home Group members. She had a love of plants and contributed many of her own for this annual event in past years. There will also be a marmalade stall, fairtrade coffee, homemade cakes and live music. The event takes place from 10.30am until 12.30pm.

The exhibition by artist Juni Hounslow who creates under the name “JuniPerloony” closes at Courtyard Arts on Saturday. The show invites visitors into a vivid, dreamlike world where wild creatures, quiet thinkers and lush botanicals coexist in a tapestry of colour, pattern and emotion. Drawing from the artist’s signature mosaic inspired, stained glass aesthetic, Wild Reverie showcases a collection of richly textured works that blur the line between the real and the imagined.

At 5pm, All Saints' Church, Hertford hosts Hertfordshire Festival of Music’s Musica Leviosa concert. Join the Hertfordshire Festival Community Concert Band for a magical concert of music from Harry Potter, Star Wars, Wicked, Indiana Jones and more. The county boasts a high concentration of global studios, including Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, Elstree Studios, Sky Studios Elstree, and BBC Studioworks, creating major box-office hits like Barbie, Wonka, and Paddington. In this concert, there’s a celebration of the contribution Hertfordshire makes to the international film industry and the memorable music that brings these box-office hits to life. Tickets are available in advance and on the door.

All Saints’ Church is taking part in the Churches Count on Nature Initiative from Saturday until 14th June. During this time, they’ll carry out a survey of all the wildlife that calls the churchyard home. The Church is looking for people to get involved to identify as many plants as they can. The Church is then inviting anyone who has been involved to tea in the Church at 3pm on Sunday 14 June, when everyone can share what has found. If anyone is interested in joining in, please email the Vicar ([email protected]) who will put you in touch with those coordinating this work.

Hertfordshire Festival of Music continues on Sunday with a Special Festival Service: Music for Choir & Ensemble. Led by the Revd Simon Cutmore. The service reflects the theme Transfer Corpus — the movement of the Body of Christ from altar to people, and from worship into the life of the Church. Music for the service includes Mozart’s Missa brevis in D minor (K.65), written in 1769 when the composer was just twelve years old. Scored for choir, two solo violins, and continuo, the work is concise, serious in tone, and remarkable for its poise and assurance.

There is a plant sale at Mudlarks Community Garden Café on Sunday from 10am until 12.30pm. Browse a selection of plants lovingly grown by the Mudlarks Community, including vegetable plants, herbs, flowers and more, all ready for your garden this summer. Every purchase helps support adults with learning disabilities and mental health challenges through training, volunteering and paid work opportunities at Mudlarks.

Also from 10am, the Makers & Bakers Farmers & Craft Markets take place at BEAM. Pop along and support local, small artisan creators, makers and bakers. It's a great opportunity to find that perfect gift with many stalls to browse from. The market is on until 3pm.
There’s a Family Service with Millmead School Choir at Hertford URC Church at 10.30am. Everyone is welcome and tea and coffee will be served afterwards.

With firsthand accounts from villagers past and present, the Museum explores what the future might hold and how the village retains its sense of community in a rapidly changing world.

The Hertford Castle grounds are open from 7.30am until 6.30pm throughout the weekend. It's the perfect spot for walking, admiring the Castle and feeding the ducks. Duck food is available to purchase (50p a bag) from the Town & Tourist Information Centre.

From next Wednesday, the Hertford Dramatic & Operatic Society perform The Vicar of Dibley - A Holy Wholly Happy Ending at BEAM. Vicar Geraldine Granger and the other Dibley parishioners are fed up with all the “townies” buying up properties in the village – until one particularly charming newcomer catches Geraldine’s eye, that is… Could he be the one she has been waiting for? Is this her chance of a holy wholly happy ending, or will the other eccentric inhabitants of Dibley mess things up for her? Come and catch up with your favourite quirky characters as they wreak comic mayhem once again on the Hertford stage.

Amazing sketch of the The Salisbury Arms Hotel - Hertford 😍

Still instantly recognisable from this image today, The Bell Inn, known as the Salisbury Arms since 1820, in Hertford. This pen and wash drawing by Thomas Frederick Luppino (1749-1845), a scene painter at Covent Garden and Drury Lane, and avid sketch artist (Image ref: DE/X1039/1/7a).

The Bell Inn was first mentioned 1431 and probably named after the market bell. The pub was renamed The Salisbury Arms in 1820, suggesting this sketch was made by Luppino before that date.
