It was fantastic to open this morning’s Metro and find a journey we helped set up leading the travel section, three pages of Uganda at its wildest.

So, what is it actually like to meet a wild chimpanzee?
James Draven found out the hard way, slipping in the mud at the feet of Mweya, the alpha male of Kyambura Gorge, and apologising on instinct: “Sorry! Accident!” Chimps, he points out, are “much stronger than the average person”, “easily capable of shifting a piano” and “much, much bigger than you imagine”.

The setting is every bit as remarkable as the residents. Kyambura is “a subterranean forest carved deep into the grasslands” of Queen Elizabeth National Park, appearing “almost as if by magic” some 100 metres below the savannah. Down there live 32 chimpanzees, among them Kaaka, a grandmother of 54, and after two hours of trekking and an hour in their company, his verdict is the one every guest comes home with: “There’s something so human about chimps that I speak to them as if they know what I’m saying.” Then, “too soon, our time with them is over”.

James stayed on the edge of the gorge at Honey Bear Bush Camp with our friends at WildPlaces Africa, where elephants wander through camp, the tents are generous and evenings end by the fire beneath the fever tree.
And the chimps are only the start of what this park offers. Game drives across the savannah, boat safaris on the Kazinga Channel among some of the biggest concentrations of hippos in Africa, the famous tree climbing lions of the Ishasha sector, sundowners on the rims of volcanic crater lakes and more than 600 species of birds.

Uganda has long played second fiddle to Africa’s better known safari countries, and we have never quite understood why. It is hard to name another park that packs in this much wildlife, landscape and variety, or better hosts to show you than WildPlaces Africa.

Where you stay shapes how Peru feels.

Everyone arrives with the same checklist: the citadel, the lake, the lines in the desert. Fair enough. But the Peru we love lives in the places you sleep.

In Lima we start you in a 1914 mansion built by the architect of the presidential palace, with art from the city’s private collections on the walls. In the Sacred Valley there is Sol y Luna, which Petit and Franz Miribel built to pay for the school next door. The hotel below Machu Picchu keeps 372 kinds of native orchid in its gardens. In Cusco you sleep in what was once a palace and then a convent, with Inca water channels still running through the courtyards. And Arequipa gives you eleven rooms inside walls cut from white volcanic stone when the city was founded in 1540.

Higher up it gets wilder. There is a camp in the Colca pitched where National Geographic first entered the valley in 1934, still the only one of its kind in Peru. At Tinajani you get two tents to yourself, one for sleeping and one for living, and a hot tub on the deck for the stars. On Lake Titicaca, eighteen suites sit on their own peninsula, a boat ride from Taquile, where the knitting is done by the men.
Then the Amazon, twice: the lodge that started Inkaterra back in the 1970s, with 17,000 hectares of forest to itself, and a river boat with just four suites on the two rivers whose meeting makes the Amazon. And finally the far north coast, where a 1,560 pound black marlin caught in 1953 is still the biggest ever taken on rod and reel. Hemingway turned up three years later to try his luck.

We choose in Peru for the welcome, the position and the quiet.

Journeys without compromise. That was the phrase in our last post, and it felt only right to follow it with a working example of one.

Every itinerary we make takes time. We fret over the decisions, all of them, drawing on years on the ground, the contacts who know a place from the inside, and a good deal of instinct. It is a difficult thing to explain from the outside. Most people only really see it once they have travelled with us, and then they see it completely.

So here is one, laid out decision by decision, an itinerary we tied up recently.

Michael and Josie came to us for their honeymoon: five weeks in January and February, with one ambition, to make it the most it could possibly be. Safari, beach, forest and desert, with the comfort climbing as the weeks went on. Michael had seen Africa before. Josie never had, and Michael knew she would love it. They both work incredibly long hours, so it came together between scheduled calls and a few hundred messages, across six months and four versions. No compromises, at any stage.

Forgive the length of this one! It is the only honest way to show what goes into every trip we make ✈️

Hide & Seek was founded on a simple ethos: journeys without compromise.

From the very beginning, that has meant one thing above all. Our time. As long as it takes, at every stage, before, during and long after each journey, to get every detail exactly right. Because journeys without compromise begin with time without compromise.

Nine years later, that belief has been repaid beyond anything we could have planned. Growth every single year, without a penny spent on advertising. The truth is we have never really had to sell Hide & Seek. You did that. Travelling with us, returning, and trusting us with your parents, your children and your closest friends. We do not take a moment of it lightly. Thank you.

Now, as we step into our tenth year, there are exciting things on the horizon, and we cannot wait to share them. But the detail at the heart of it all will never change. Our time, and our commitment to you, without compromise.

A century of wonder. A lifetime of witnessing. 🌍

In 1926, Sir David Attenborough entered a world where the wild felt infinite. It was a world of 70% wilderness vast, untouched, and loud with the heartbeat of nature.

Today, as he celebrates his 100th year, he stands as the ultimate eyewitness to how much we have asked of our planet. He has seen the ice retreat, the forests quiet, and the “hidden” corners of our Earth vanish.

But David’s legacy isn’t one of despair. It’s one of profound, unwavering love.

For 100 years, he has been the voice in our living rooms, whispering with reverence so as not to wake a sleeping cub, or standing in the rain to show us a miracle we might otherwise have stepped over. He taught us that to “seek” isn’t just to travel, it’s to acknowledge the fragility of what we find.

He didn’t just narrate the natural world; he became its heartbeat. He gave us the eyes to see the beauty and the heart to feel the loss.
