A great evening on the North Downs last week delivering a Corporate Orienteering Challenge. 🧭

Working together, the group tackled a series of navigation challenges, photography tasks and problem-solving activities, all designed to encourage teamwork, communication and a bit of friendly competition.

It was fantastic to hear such positive feedback at the end of the evening, with comments about how much fun everyone had, how well organised the event was and how good it was to connect with colleagues in a completely different environment.

Outdoor team building doesn’t have to mean the same activities every time. Sometimes all you need is a map, a challenge and a chance to work together. 🤝

If you’re looking for something a little different for your team, we’d be delighted to help.

Have you noticed more leaves on the paths than usual, and the hedgerows and trees are showing flashes of brown and orange earlier than you would expect? 🍂

Most people assume that autumn and leaf drop are a result of falling temperatures, but they are mostly related to the shortening days. This current ‘False Autumn’ is actually a result of extreme heat and dry weather, with our countryside now in drought. The early browning and dropping of leaves are a symptom of this, as our trees try to conserve water.

This early leaf drop can bring autumn walking conditions a little earlier than usual. In addition, changes in weather, such as rain arriving or thunderstorms developing, mean the walker needs to be ready to adapt.

Dropped leaves can cover the less distinct paths; add rain and other leafy matter into the mix and mud can become an issue. 🍁

Autumn walking can be adventurous, mostly because we become complacent over the summer. Poor choices of footwear. Forgetting to pack a waterproof. Confidence that you know the walk only to find that paths have been covered or become inaccessible. Getting timings wrong by leaving too late in the day, not having that head torch.

All these issues can spoil a good walk, but are easily mitigated by some planning and preparation. Walking is fun and great for the body and mind; don’t spoil one by not being on top of your game. 🥾

There’s something really satisfying about watching confidence grow over the course of a weekend. 🗺️

Our recent Open the Map and NNAS Bronze Award courses near Horsham brought together a fantastic group of people, all taking the first step on their navigation journey.

By the end of the course, everyone had developed new skills, gained confidence with a map and compass, and was ready to start exploring new places under their own steam.

One of the best moments? Looking across the group and seeing everyone looking at maps instead of phones. That’s exactly what these courses are all about. 🤩

If you’ve ever wanted to feel more confident exploring the countryside, we’d love to help you take that first step. Have a look at our upcoming course dates or get in touch to find out which course is right for you.

There's still time to sign up for the Horsham Matters sponsored walk on Saturday 19 September. 🥾

We're delighted to be supporting them with this walk; behind every successful event like this is a lot of planning. We've worked closely with the Horsham Matters team to professionally plan, route and guide the walk, so everyone taking part can concentrate on enjoying the day, raising money and supporting an incredible local charity.

The route takes in some wonderful Sussex countryside, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the views, chat with fellow walkers and know you're in safe, experienced hands throughout.

If you're looking for a challenge that gives something back to the local community, we'd love to see you there, you can sign up over on their website. 🔗

A huge thank you to Horsham Matters for inviting us to be part of such a worthwhile event.

One of the questions we're often asked is, "What if I'm not as experienced as everyone else?" 🤔

The answer is...that's exactly why we keep our teaching groups small.

Everyone arrives with different levels of experience and confidence. Some are opening a map for the first time, while others are looking to build on skills they've already developed.

Richard's approach is to meet people where they are, adapting the day so everyone leaves having learned something new and feeling more confident than when they arrived. 🧭

Reviews like this tell us we're getting that balance right, and that's exactly what we aim for on every course.

If you'd like to develop your navigation skills, build your confidence outdoors or simply learn from an experienced, qualified guide in a friendly, supportive environment, we'd love to welcome you on one of our upcoming courses. 🥾

Visit our website to see what's coming up or get in touch if you're not sure which course is right for you.

Happy International Dog Day to our Pied A Terre Adventures four-legged team member, Maggie! 🐾

Maggie has become a familiar face on plenty of our adventures. Whether she's waiting patiently at the finish, joining us on a recce, or simply making everyone smile, she's always happy to be outdoors.

We know lots of our walkers have canine companions too, so we'd love to see them. Show us a photo of your walking buddy in the comments and help us celebrate International Dog Day. 🐶

How confident are you with a map and compass? 🤔

If the answer is “not very” or “I used to be, but I’m a bit rusty,” then our Open the Map Course could be just what you’re looking for. 🗺️

This relaxed, practical one-day course is designed for people with little or no experience, as well as those who want to refresh skills they haven’t used for years. Working in small groups, you’ll learn the fundamentals of map reading and compass use, with plenty of time to put everything into practice out in the countryside. 🌳

By the end of the day, you’ll have the confidence to start exploring on your own, with a much better understanding of how to read the landscape, choose simple routes and navigate safely. After all, there’s something very satisfying about knowing exactly where you are (without relying on your phone!). 🧭

If you’ve been meaning to learn, or simply brush up on your navigation skills, we’d love to welcome you on a future course. 🤩

Reviews like this mean a great deal to us. 🤩

Our Amberley Sunset Walks are about far more than watching the sun go down. They’re an opportunity to explore the South Downs at one of the most beautiful times of day, learn a little about the landscape, and enjoy good company along the way.

We’re especially pleased to hear that this guest, who joined us as a solo walker, felt so welcome. That’s exactly the kind of experience we hope everyone has, whether they come with friends or on their own.

A huge thank you for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review. We hope to see you on another walk soon. 🌅
