Following my recent ship visits aboard Cunard’s Queen Anne and Celebrity Apex, I’ve been reflecting on how they compare, especially when it comes to families.
I already regularly recommend Queen Anne to clients travelling in multi-generational groups as she really does have something for everyone. From elegant shared spaces and fantastic entertainment day and night to a relaxed but refined onboard feel, she works beautifully when you’ve got grandparents, parents and children all holidaying together. And while Cunard isn’t family focused in the same way as Royal Caribbean or MSC, they do genuinely cater well for children, with dedicated programmes and a welcoming approach that means younger guests are very much part of the experience. The way Cunard made me feel so welcome and at home onboard Queen Anne, along with the exceptional hospitality throughout, really stood out.
Celebrity Apex, on the other hand, felt more grown up in atmosphere. During my short visit I didn’t actually spot any children onboard - although I am conscious my visit was during term time and she was departing on a 14 night voyage. That said, I still think she absolutely has her place for families in the right circumstances. For example, a couple travelling with a baby, who still want a more refined, adult-focused holiday, without the need yet for a full-on family resort style ship. Or families with teens who are all happy to relax, explore a variety of cuisines and enjoy beautiful design led spaces rather than needing constant organised entertainment.
In many ways, it is not about one being better than the other, it is about the type of cruise experience you want and the stage your family is at.
If you are unsure which cruise line would suit your family or multi-generational cruise best, I would be very happy to guide you.
